Beach with Belen (2)

Originally uploaded by kathsmee.

We head down to Peru this afternoon spending the night in Lima airport before heading on to Cusco to start the Inca trail on Weds……….. with the parents – should be “an adventure” – to quote Tucky!!

I have uploaded, as you can imagine, what seems like a billion photos from the Galapagos, but there really are some highlights to check out……
1. Animals – If you love animals, then obviously this is the place for you with almost 3 million photos of sea lions being taken in one week! Underwater photos (coming soon) especially cool.
2. Check out Paul looking like my mum, as in the earlier post! In his defence apparently “it was after a dive and the suction does funny things to my face and as for my hair, Kathi cut it, I’m getting it cut by a professional soon……………. “
3. See the life size sand sculpture of a hammer head shark we whittled up one afternoon – yup, another busy day on the beach.
4. Check out Belens birthday party, Galapagos Style!
5. Bartoleme Island, possibly the most picturesque place in the islands and also where one of the scenes of Master and Commander was shot!
……and pictures do tell the story of the Galapagos a million times better than I can with words!

p.s. this is just another picture of Belen because she´s gorgeous!

Galapagos Cruise

Trip to Las Tintorreras (9)

To complete our time in the Galapagos we hunted around for a cruise and a last minute price when we got back to the main island, unfortunate they are pretty savvy to this and their idea of a last minute price was very different to mine! The quotes we got from the hoards of travel agents were ridiculous for a pair of cheapies like us, especially as it was supposed to be low season due to the bumpy seas! Unfortunately that meant that all the cheap boats were not sailing and in for repairs. We were just getting disheartened when we stumbled across the actual office of one of the boats we had been quoted for and went in, they gave us all the discounts they possibly could and we bit their arm off to get on board! The cruise was amazing, despite the average age of the boat going from 35 on the first 3 days to 75 for the last 4 days when we changed passengers! Bless the oldies though; I know more now about avocadoes than I ever dreamed was possible and I could chuckle as they popped their hips back in getting on and off the boat each time!
Needless to say the cruise was fantastic and after eating so unhealthily, (rice does not need to be cooked in oil or served with spaghetti), for so long in Isabela I gorged on the endless fruit and vegetables on board between trips to snorkel and walk around the fantastic volcanic scenery and of course the many animals that are so fearless of human activity. I really am not particulalry an animal person, don´t get me wrong, I´m interested to a point but wouldn´t usually be that bothered. But the cruise and our time in Isabela really was amazing as far as the wildlife was concerned. When you can have your fingures nibbled by penguins, swim inches form sea turtles and literally have to step over sea lions on the way to the beach, that is pretty special. Even the birds were facinating, and that is not something I thought i would ever say. Watching the mating dance of the Blue Footed Boobie and waiting to see if the femail would respond really was a privilage. And watching the Albatros take off from their dramatic cliff side landing site was an awsome sight.

I haven´t uploaded the photos of the cruise yet but they are coming soon.
