Curitiba

Friday, March 16th, 2007

From Paraty we took the night bus to Sao Paulo where we changed at midnight and took a second night bus to Curitiba, a small town in southern Brazil with a big University population, mainly as a stopping point on the way to Iguaçu falls to avoid a 24 hour bus trip. It was a nice little town tho and we had an interesting couple of days exploring the historic Portuguese quarter and the beautiful parks and gardens outlying the city. There were some really unusual sites, like a giant modern art museum shaped like an eye which is a really famous piece of Brazilian architecture and an opera house built in the hills out of wire so it was like being outside during a concert. Really beautiful stuff and all the guide book had recommended was some crappy park with a few mangy unhappy animals in cages and a lot of perverts roaming around – rapidly starting to doubt the Lonely Planets authority.
