Punta Arenas (2)

At 5:30 in the morning five days later (27th April) we took a long and uncomfortable bus trip, crossing the border twice, from Ushuaia to Punta Arenas, our first taste of Chile. PA was a broad clean city, with not much to do but some colorful places to look at and an interesting museum. Albeit that the exhibits were dangerously secured with a charge of static electricity – couldn’t they just put up a sign saying do not touch. We also did our good deed for humanity by escorting a lost British woman back to her hotel (that she didn’t know the name of) from a rather unsavory part of town where she was wandering in the early evening toting a large amount of camera equipment, looking for a giant statue of a Shepard of all things!

After a few days in Punta Arena we spent a day in Puerto Natales a few hours further north, preparing for a big trek in Torres del Paine (rightly pronounced Pain) national park. Whilst we are making our preparations for a six day camping trek let me just set the scene for you…. It is the beginning of May and very much out of season for tourists. In Puerto Natales which is at sea level, the snow is falling thick and fast and conditions for walking to the local shop are poor, to say the least……
