More football…. Godoy Gruz vs. Rosario

Friday, April 13th, 2007

The last weekend in Mendoza was Semana Santa (Easter weekend) so not much was going on. That said we managed to visit some more Bodegas, this time on bikes and some of the smaller more boutique wineries which was really interesting.

On the Sunday there was a local match, the team in the area of town we are staying in is currently playing in the Argentinean first division and that weekend were competing at home. Needless to say I was once again terrified of going, especially having been warned by our hosts that it wasn’t safe. But once again I went along and thoroughly enjoyed it.

We were standing (no such thing as seats here) in the populares stands with the die hard fans and even stood at the sides it was a terrifying experience with all of the singing and drumming and general craziness. But fun, I think! I don’t really know how to describe it at the moment, need to let it sink in i think, and I will post some photos and video to show you the atmosphere. But boys, you would have loved it I’m sure and Wendy should be proud of my bravery!!

p.s. We have of course managed to find a TV for every Liverpool champions league match out here too, dedicated girlfriend of or what!!

Rio and more football!

Maracana

After a quick feed and change of bags in Guernsey and another three flights (one of which behind the most annoying man ever who was quite keen on doing some “plane chair gymnastics” during the 12 hour flights to Rio – and he ate my Chocolate!!! – gotta love that British Airways leg/toe room – sorry Mandy!)

Anyway, arrived in Rio and went to our slightly better than backpacker accommodation and did the beaches, sugar loaf, Christ Redeemer statue – he’s not all that impressively big, but the view from around his feet over the city is pretty cool! It amazing how they managed to build a city between so many hills.

Managed to squeeze in another game of football at the Maracana as well, here the load bangs really were gun shots! But don´t worry mum, we were really safe wghere we were sat and it was a really great game. The stadium was pretty noisy as it was a derby game, but was still only 60% full for a semi final game. The first goal went in after about 30 seconds and I thought we were in for a lesson in Brazilian defending but it ended just 1-1 and went straight to pens. Apparently the stadium is still the biggest in the world, one guy reckoned 210k but I think that would have involved everybody bringing a three year old child to sit on their knee! I was also told that Brazil were hosting the 2012 world cup – which was interesting news I think the rest of the world would like to know about!!

See… I really did go to the football!

So, my first football experience... not as terrifying as I had first imagined. On Saturday night I watched my first football game ever - and that English Soccer, not American football for all my new American readers! It was a local ... [Continue reading this entry]
