staying cool in thailand

March 7th, 2008

forget about “feeling the burn”! it’s been SO hot and humid the past couple of days here in bangkok. last night we had rain showers too, but it’s still really sticky outside.

even my kit kat requires air-conditioning (check out the label!)
product warnings

here’s a few of our favorite ways to beat the heat:

1. internet cafes. on our street alone there are 5 internet cafes. for about 50 cents an hour (or less!), you get air-conditioned comfort while you check email, chat with friends and family, or use skype to call a loved one. most in the non-tourist areas are full of little kids who come here to play video games, so i always bring a headset to listen to music to drown out their shouts and the fighting noises and blaring music coming from their games!

2. get a massage. ahh yes, it’s a tough life here in thailand. you knew this would make my list huh? =)

solo mission

March 6th, 2008

this morning i came across this article on vagablogging.net by alison brick which sort of mirrors thoughts i’ve been having lately as i’ve been planning my next solo leg of the trip… the last few weeks have been a flurry of fun and excitement in traveling with an amazing group of girls. we were always on the move, always planning our next adventure, always getting ourselves into or out of “taxi drama”, as kira put it. =) i feel so lucky to have been able to share some of those experiences with them and also to be undertaking this entire trip with jess as my partner in crime.

but i’ve always known, and i think on this trip i’ve discovered even more, that there is a part of me that craves alone time and thrills at the thought of solo travel. when you travel alone, i find that you often go out of your comfort zone and that’s a really scary place to be sometimes. yet it’s also exhilirating, and forces you to reach out and to make connections that you often would miss when you’re traveling with a companion or a group. i’ve made some amazing, lifelong friends (hi, adrienne!) when we were both traveling solo. yet the last time i really took a trip on my own was in 2000 in london. and i’ve decided… 8 years is just too long.

winding down

March 5th, 2008

stolen from christy’s myspace page, originally posted on march 2, 2008:

back in bangkok and i’m missing the country life, but i suppose it’s a good transition. after spending so much time in quaint villages, i feel a little overwhelmed by bangkok.it’s so much city… but i realize that this is a good way to end the trip and get me ready to head back home. and also, get me another massage while i’m here too! 🙂

i can feel my high winding down a bit, like any good high, buzz, crush, infatuation, fire, etc. eventually does. it’s the natural course of life, and it allows time for the build up again. but it is sad to see it start to dwindle.

who wants to play a guessing game? (and an update)

March 5th, 2008

stolen from christy’s myspace page, originally posted on feb 29, 2008:

whoever can guess closest to the number of insect bites, stings, and red welts covering my body without going over will win a special prize from thailand. jess tallied them up this morning. as much as i love thailand, the bugs seem to love me even more.

post your answers in either blog comments or regular comments and i’ll reveal the correct answer the next chance i have to blog.

and now for an update…(warning, quite long)

yesterday

March 5th, 2008

stolen from christy’s myspace page, originally posted on feb 25, 2008:

was amazing.

it was an “i could die right now and my life would be complete” kind of day…

a “pinch me, cause i must be dreaming” kind of day…

a cheesy and over the top “i looooooooove life sooooooo much!” kind of the day.

if you want to get high, ride an elephant.

they are slow going and greedy for bananas.

they are rough under your feet

they are huge with kind eyes that tear up

they are beautiful in all of their majestic glory

they have amazing trunks that will wrap around your arm (and even lift up your (kimi’s) skirt — i think we got a picture, will post when we get back!)

they are so, so beautiful.

farang

“farang” thai for foreigner

i’m so farang, i’m not even sure if i’m sure that farang is the right word to describe me, but it doesn’t matter because i am absolutely loving it here.

after a 10 hr flight, plus a 4 hr layover, plus a 6 hr flight, kimi and i arrived in bangkok international airport and got that stamp on our passports. we waited for kira to join us and then caught a cab to the marriot spa and resort where we met jess, lisa yee and her mom.

we spent the night walking around and buying food from convenience stores and street vendors.

the thing i love about being fadang is that everything is so new, exciting and interesting. the simplest things, like walking into a 7 eleven or crossing the street take on an sense of adventure.

time warp

March 1st, 2008

sorry guys, i’ve been having too much fun living life the past few days to get around to writing about it! oops! =) forgive me this little time warp, i’ve got tons of new pictures on the way and lots of experiences to share…

since kira, kimi, christy, lisa, and lisa’s mom joined us in bangkok, we’ve:

– taken an overnight train to bangkok (where we slept on bunk beds that reminded me of sleeping in the overhead bin of an airplane!)

– gotten two hour thai massages in our own private room at healthland (VIP style!)

– took a tour up to the northernmost part of thailand and across to burma/myanmar

– rode elephants (SO FUN!!!)

– hiked through waterfalls

– stayed overnight with a hilltribe group

– flew south to phuket and then by bus to ko surin island

– spent 3 days, 2 nights camped out on the beach

– snorkeled all day, being taken from site to site by longtail boat

– visited the moken people (also known as the “sea gypsies”)

– saw a monkey!

– drank snake whiskey (everyone swore “never again!”)

– stayed in our own little bungalow cabins in khuraburi

– ate, shopped, and laughed way more than should be legal

i’ve had the best times of my life in the last 10 days! will try to upload our pictures and share some more stories soon….

bye bye, chiang mai

February 19th, 2008

wow, i’m a poet and didn’t even know it. hehe. lame, i know. i’ll stop. =)

it’s hard to believe that i’ve been in chiang mai for 3 weeks now! time flies when you’re having fun, i guess. i feel like i really lived here, you know? it’s definitely been a great experience. this morning i woke up early and made sure everything fits into my new bag. yup, i ended up having to buy a new one, despite promising myself i wouldn’t shop… originally we had only planned on being here for 12 days, 10 of them at the meditation center where we’d be wearing only white, so i had only brought “real clothes” to last a few days. i ended up buying a few more things along the way once i realized i was staying a few weeks rather than a few days, hence the need for a bigger bag.

bargaining for my new “le sportsac” bag last night at the night bazaar was part of the fun… the first price i was given was 1200 baht ($40!), which i knew to be a rip-off, since they probably cost next to nothing to make somewhere in china and there are more than a few stalls selling almost the same items. so i strolled around a few different vendors, telling each one the lowest price the one before had given me, to get them to drop their price. (it also helps to be buying more than one of something, but that would defeat my purpose.) eventually i wound up at a stall near anusarn market which had the exact pattern and style i wanted. the young girl started at 800 baht, i acted noncommittal and ready to walk away, and we settled at 400. i walked home with my new bag, reflecting on how inflated the prices become once you’re identified as a foreigner.
