why i love sunday nights

February 18th, 2008

playing with fire, originally uploaded by maliayosh. you can see a video of these guys here.

sunday evenings here in chiang mai are my favorite time of the week! every week i’ve been going back to the sunday walking street market which takes place on ratchamodoen street, from tha pae gate all the way down and around the surrounding streets too. every week i try to alter my route a little bit so that i see another street, find another cool new artist, or find new food stalls to try.

top model comes to thailand?

February 17th, 2008

i don’t know if tyra banks had a hand in this, but i stumbled upon a fashion show for “northern top model 2008” at chiang mai airport plaza yesterday.

it was interesting to see the costumes they used in this round – it was all influenced by northern thai hilltribe styles for this particular round. i always come across the most random things in malls here in thailand! last time jess and i found a tae kwon do championship in seacon square in bangkok. so funny!

tv detox

February 15th, 2008

this morning i had breakfast with my friend jay, from australia. he’s heading back to bangkok tonight so we were catching up on what we’d both been up to the last few days. we went our separate ways so that jay could go return a book to the used book store and i came to check email, etc. after this i plan to head to the used book store too, for my latest fix.

at breakfast, i realized that it’s been about 3 weeks since i’ve last watched tv. three weeks! this, coming from a girl who five weeks ago couldn’t live without her tivo. i was completely addicted to being able to fast-forward through commercials, and to being able to watch whatever i wanted, when i wanted it. but the downside to tivo is that it drastically shortened my attention span! i had no patience for commercials when visiting non-tivo households (like my dad’s). plus, with hours and hours of shows that i’d asked it to record, there was no excuse to say “there’s nothing on,” and to turn off the tv. i must confess, i spent wayyy more time than is healthy or desirable sitting in front of my tivo.

meditation retreat @ wat suan dok

February 15th, 2008

we practiced evening walking meditation here

tuesday, february 12, 2008

2pm – flag a saengtaw to wat suan dok. the next two passengers to get on are two aussie girls who happen to be heading to the retreat too!

2:15pm – we arrive at the monk chat office at wat suan dok, it feels like the first day of school or summer camp or something. a few people are waving to friends or fellow travelers they recognize. most people are quiet and keeping to themselves, but there’s a group of “bad girls” – the ones who would be in detention soon if this were really the first day of school – they’re chatting loudly amongst themselves while one with scruffy bleach-blond hair juggles some random objects fished out of her huge backpack. i wonder how they’ll fare when we have to be “silent”… over 50 people showed up for this week’s retreat – mostly twenty-somethings, and from countries all over the globe: ireland, switzerland, fance, UK, australia, NZ, germany, portugal, you name it! plus about a half-dozen from the good old US of A. most have packed light since our stay is only overnight, but others that are in transit are toting those huge “backpacker” bags (geez i’m so happy i don’t have one of those!)

technical dificulties

February 14th, 2008

bootsnall has been upgrading our blogs, so you may have noticed that the site was down the past few days. there are still a few kinks here and there that i’m working out, but overall it should improve the layout of the site and give me more options for posts. =)

one of the things that is still off right now is the pages that had links to our itinerary, map and pictures. hold tight, i’ll hopefully have them back soon. cross your fingers that i don’t have to redo them because they took forever! lol.

for now, view my pictures at http://www.flickr.com/photos/maliayoshioka. i added some from the meditation retreat and will be posting about that soon!

oh and happy valentines day! (for those of you on this side of the dateline, at least.) in honor of singles awareness day, i spent the whole morning at a spa – body scrub, rose oil massage, facial, mani/pedi – the works! since i’m my own valentine this year, i figured i had to do it right. =) gotta love thailand…

happiness is…

February 9th, 2008

i started this list on our second day in bangkok, when we were laying around the pool at our hotel. the day was unusually clear of smog, and everything just appeared so vibrant. bangkok didn’t seem quite as chaotic then as it usually is… =)

happiness is…

… heavenly massages steps from our hotel
… baby elephants in the street
… street vendors every ten feet or less!
… the perfect cappuccino
… just being, not doing
… no agenda other than “have fun”
… freedom to do what you choose
… the kindness of friends
… learning not to change each other, but to build on strengths
… letting go
… slowing down
… looking inside
… when colors seem brighter
… the sound of runnign water above the street/construction noise
… our hotel’s breakfast buffet!
… chilis setting my mouth on fire, then going back for more
… eating thai food in thailand

and a few more to add since coming to chiang mai…

… getting lost wondering down narrow soi (side streets) and finding new places
… meeting new people
… letting your creativity flow
… somphet market steps from my door
… flowers everywhere
… a cold singha beer (once a week at least, right jess?)
… a nice, clean room with hot shower for 150baht a night! ($5US)
… learning to cook new dishes with new friends
… the sanctuary of an air conditioned internet cafe on a hot day
… curling up with a good book
… fresh orange juice on the street
… not caring whether your drinks come with ice
… speaking thai, french, japanese, and english all in one day
… finding a nice shady spot in buak hat park for people watching

rediscovering creativity

February 8th, 2008

front side of my pendant, originally uploaded by maliayosh.

it’s been a long time since my life has stood still long enough for me to really focus on being creative. in my day-to-day life back in honolulu, and even to some extent during this trip, i was always moving from point A to point B and planning the route to point C… i very rarely slow down enough to clear my mind and let creativity flow.

lately i’ve been trying to write more (as you can see here on my blog!) and i’ve been searching out classes here in chiang mai that focus on things that will bring me inner calm and clarity, like the meditation retreat i’ll be taking next week. i love that there are so many artistic opportunities here in chiang mai! to me, taking a class and being able to say “look what i made!” at the end is way more fun than sightseeing or tours. i think i’m finding a good balance of both here. in search of enlightenment

February 6th, 2008

this morning as i was getting ready for the day, the peace and quiet of the little road i’m staying in was shattered by the loud banging of drums and “lion dance” music which seemed to be right outside my door! i wasn’t able to get changed in time to see the actual lion dance, but this served as a reminder that today is chinese new year! all the markets have colorful red decorations and little treats, and i keep hearing lion dances going on around town but always seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time – i still haven’t even caught one! maybe tonight… =)

after the lion dance music in the morning i decided to call up good old eddie from chiang mai to pick me up so that i could visit the bo sa umbrella village a few kilometers outside of town. he came to get me and told me stories along the way – he’s leaving for chiang rai on friday to take his family to watch his son’s muay tai match! the umbrella village was ok – sort of touristy, but i did enjoy walking around and watching the craftspeople at work. i hung out watching this smiley old man for a bit – he was putting all of the umbrella’s spines into place and securing them with string, then later a woman would apply the mulberry (sa) paper, and others would paint intricate designs on them.

such a happy smile

happy coincidences

February 5th, 2008

sometimes there are random events that lead up to you meeting someone new… and yesterday jess and i had one of those moments. we were trying to flag a saengtaw to get to the arcade bus station so that jess could book her overnight trip back to bangkok. the first saengtaw we tried didn’t understand and/or wasn’t going that way (with saengtaw, you tell them where you need to go and if they’re going that way, you hop on) and so we flagged a second one and the driver nodded and sped off in the direction of the bus station.

once we arrived there, we tried to give him the 20baht fare but he told us, “no, i wait for you – you come back to chiang mai?” and so we agreed to pay him later. jess booked a ticket with another front row seat (lucky girl!) on the overnight bus for less than $20US and we went back to find our saengtaw waiting for us.

our driver’s name is eddie – “eddie from chiang mai” was how he introduced himself, using hand gestures to supplement his limited english. he asked where we were headed next and we told him we were thinking of doing a mae ping river cruise, and he ran to grab a flyer from his dashboard describing a two hour tour and offered to take us there. of course, once we got there eddie ran in with us to make sure we got on the cruise and asked them how long it would take so that he could come back to pick us up! by this point we realized that we had our own personal chauffeur for the day!

cavities!!

February 3rd, 2008

i’ve heard that dentists in thailand are very good and more importantly, very cheap! so i looked into getting my teeth cleaned while here in chiang mai, as i’ve been without insurance for quite awhile now and dental work back home is sooo expensive! my dentist had been telling me for months that i had a cavity forming between two of my upper molars, but without insurance it would have cost so much that i kept putting it off.

when we first got to chiang mai, i looked up dentists in jess’s lonely planet guide and came across dental 4 u, a clinic located close to where we were staying in chiang mai. then the other day, the guy that sold us our “burmese visa run” package had a mouthful of braces, so i asked what he’d heard of the place and he said it was one of the best. armed with this info, i headed over to book an appointment for this evening.
