who had money on day 2?

February 3rd, 2008

hey y’all… so we’re back in chiang mai. =) i say all bets are off though – even though we stayed only 2 days at the monastery, i think both of us definitely could have done all 10. but gee, its great to see who had faith in us! haha.

the night before we left for the monastery was fun – we had met such nice people at our cooking class that we planned to meet up with them for a drink later in the evening (but not too late cause we had to be at the monastery at 10am!) so we all went to a tapas bar called “the house” that is supposed to be a hot spot for local celebrities, although we had the place all to ourselves. cool ambience – floor pillows and cushions everywhere to sit and lounge on, and a cute little menu of tapas food. we met up with lawrence and toto (chefs from the philippines), candice and her boyfriend raj (from australia) and had some wine and cheese over lots of laughter, storytelling, and dancing! jess wasn’t feeling well so she hit the sack early and i had one more drink with the group at a little sidewalk bar (i’m using the term “bar” loosely here as its just a little stand with a couple of chairs set up on the street near our guest house) called the chillout bar. said our farewells and went to join jess in dreamland…

the next morning we got up early to head out to the monastery. the guesthouse’s driver got lost trying to find it for us, and ended up dropping us off at a wat a little up the road. after some difficulty trying to find the right place we arrived and were greeted by pra chaibordin, a thai monk who spoke some english, who checked us in and walked us through all the details.

the grounds of the monastery itself were beautiful… its a forest-like setting up in the hills with lots of trees and a temple and a chedi (pagoda) and areas to do outdoor meditation. our rooms were next to each other so we cleaned up a little bit then headed back to get oriented with the rest of the new group.

i heart chiang mai

January 28th, 2008

oh my goodness, i LOVE chiang mai! so far, i think this has been my favorite of the places we’ve been on this trip…

we left bangkok last night on the VIP sleeper bus around 8:40pm, which was kind of fun. a little uncomfortable, and a little bit chilly (cold a/c blasting for 10 hours!) but we had the first two seats on the top deck of the bus so we had a whole windshield in front of us – an unobstructed view like we were driving the bus itself! the seats reclined, but they were somewhat small so it was hard to find a comfortable spot – sort of like riding in an airplane, but with more legroom since we were right up front. you get these little taro buns or red bean buns as a snack about an hour into the trip, and just after midnight we made a pit-stop at a place that had noodles and other stuff to eat – i slept throught it but jess said it was good. =)

when we arrived just after 6am in chiang mai, we jumped in a sawngthaew (its kinda like a pick up truck with two rows of benches in the back that functions as a taxi) that took us to the sk house guesthouse where we’re staying in central chiang mai. it doesn’t look exactly like the pictures, but our room is like $15/night and it works fine for me! our room is right in front of the pool on the ground level – in fact, that’s where jess is now and where i plan to be in about 20 minutes! =)

what’s cooking?

January 27th, 2008

so tonight we’re catching the vip sleeper bus up to chiang mai. we both packed up this morning and if you thought our suitcases for the trip were small, you’d be totally impressed with the amount of stuff we’re taking to chiang mai for the 12 days we’ll be staying there! we each have a purse and a small “overnight” sized bag. not too shabby! i was telling jess this morning it’s going to be hard for me to go back to having more “stuff” than what fits in my suitcase. it’s so easy to keep track of things when you hardly have anything! i love it! and i also love that we’ve gotten into the habit of doing our laundry in the morning and hanging it out to dry during the day – this way, we always have clean clothes and it’s another way to pack less. =)

ok so back to the reason for my post! i’m soooo excited for our cooking class that we’ll be taking on wednesday! we’re taking Course C at the Baan Thai Cookery School in chiang mai. (click on the links to see more from the website) hopefully we’ll be able to make some yummy thai food when we get back home! =) and it also looks like the website has a “web album” with pictures from each day… so maybe you’ll see us on there if you check on thursday! woo hoo! =)

supersize me

January 26th, 2008

ok so jess and i are not exactly what you’d call obese, but i swear you need to be miniscule to fit in some of the clothes on offer at chatuchak weekend market! today on the skytrain there was a girl with a waist that was literally the size of my thigh. i’m not even kidding. i’m not looking for “you’re not fat!” comments or anything here, but just wanted to give my observations…

Chatuchak weekend market is like the swap meet on crack (i think this was jess’s exact term today) – you can find anything under the sun here, and literally you will be sweating it out under the sun because it’s HOT! we arrived bright and early at 8am when the vendors were still setting up and went up and down the endless rows of vendors all morning, stopping for a bite to eat at lunch before heading back out into the chaos for one more round in the early afternoon. we had said when we were planning for this trip that we wouldn’t be shopping much, but you really can’t help it here. things are so inexpensive and everything in our suitcases starts to look old after you’ve worn it five or six times. my plan is to take out one item for each new item i buy, so that i’m editing down to things that i really love. we’ll see how that goes. =) today we both got a few things that we really wanted and/or needed, and didn’t go too far overboard (it helps when nothing fits – we’re limited to accessories for the most part! haha). the market only happens on saturdays and sundays, but we know we can always come back if there was anything we find that we just can’t live without. we’ll be here til mid-april, after all…

a lovely evening in bangkok

January 25th, 2008

Tonight was a lovely evening. Malia and I treated ourselves for trip
to the beauty salon downstairs of Aung’s apartment. We were a bit
skeptical coming in & weren’t entirely sure what we’d get for a
whopping 150 bht (about $6 U.S.). To our pleasant surprise we were
cared for by several stylists who really knew what they were doing
(you could feel it in their hands, the way they cut & angled the
dryer). Got a shampoo, face massage, cut, blowdry, and style. Walked
out felling like a million bucks!

We set out for dinner & decided on a restaurant that had air
conditioning. Decided on fancy dinner at the King Park Avenue, the
nicest hotel we have within a 5 minute walking radius. Salad bar,
soup, ponzu sake sashimi, grilled porkchops, baked potatoes, lamb,
steak, prawns, fruit, and a pitcher of Singha beer later we start up a
duscussion.. “Cheers to us! Why don’t people do this more often?”. In
fact, we’ve barely seen any foreign travelers outside of the major
tourist pits. A few couples here and there at beach and troubled
backpackers touting 100+ lbs. of goods across the Chao Praya. No
girls who saved their pennies, quit their jobs, and figure out their
path along the way. I’m sure they’re out there, maybe even on the next
street over, but nonetheless, we proceeded to cheers to our little
voyage.

a place to call home

January 23rd, 2008

i think it must be a quality that most human beings share – the desire to find a “home.” we’re getting to the age where more than a few of my friends are now official homeowners and even while we are on the road here in another country, i find myself longing for some kind of familiarity, for the comforts of a home base. it probably is also intensified by the medicine-head daze i’ve been in for the last few days, because whenever i’m sick all i want is my own bed, familiar food, maybe a good book, and some peace and quiet.

on this journey, i’ve also noticed that i long for “home” even before i know where it is… like when we spent our whole first day of the trip traveling through airports and uncomfortable plane rides, all i could think of was falling into bed at kirstin’s. we arrived at their hong kong apartment after midnight, quickly got the tour, said some hellos and promptly fell into bed. we were finally “home.” same thing with aung’s parent’s house, and same thing with making it to aung’s apartment too…

it’s a small world after all

January 23rd, 2008

today we took a day-trip to an outdoor museum/theme park called muang boran. according to the website, “Just a visit to the Ancient City is comparable to a Thailand-round journey within a day.” and i must say, this is true… it was truly the lazy man’s way to experience all of thailand’s architecture, history, and culture in the air conditioned comfort of aung’s little honda. there were replicas of famous temples, even the grand palace (bangkok), a floating market where we could buy lunch, the ruins of sukothai, and more. we also found various animals scattered around trying to escape the heat, including hog deer, a cow (maybe? jess thinks it’s a bull), and even water buffalo!
