Up the river – The mighty Amazon

Sunday, April 17th, 2005

14 Apr – 17 Apr, 2005

Due to expensive flights from Cayenne, we ended up taking the surface travel option to head back towards Venezuela. This involves 4 nights on a boat on the Amazon, from Macapá near the mouth to Manaus.

Toucans, Macaws, and 2 types of river dolphins were the highlights. Lounging in hammocks for 5 days was nice, but the food, while perfectly edible and delicious the first time, was a bit boring when served with little or no variation for practically every meal.

Prison islands

Îles du Salut, off the coast of French Guiana, were used by the French when they sent convicts to South America. Those who know the book or film, Papillon, will know of them. The islands are quite infamous. Deportation was stopped around 50 years ago, and nature is now reclaiming. Who knows how much longer the walls can stand up to the power of a growing jungle…

Île St Joseph
Île St Joseph – Nature takes back an abandoned block of cells on another notorious prison island.

An eerie shape in the tree
An eerie shape in the tree. A knot of wood creates a scarey silouhette. Especially so when considered in the context that this was also in the abandoned prison on Île St Joseph.
