Fitness and other ludicrous fantasies

Saturday, May 10, 2008 2:57 PM

Staying healthy?
I’m trying to get back to some semblance of fitness.
My little guy is a bit young for organized sports, although the older son did play basketball and football in school.
Myself, the occasional hike and a light workout.
We have a rowing cycle and some dumbbells. amazingly enough, they do get used.
We were in the mountains last weekend. The area is called Pandaan. It’s about two hours away from Surabaya. We were quite close to Tretes. The mountains are stunning.

A few references were made to “Gurus in the mist.”

Not the lamest of puns that day.

Still sporting a nasty bruise. A sudden rain hit and I went sliding off the side of the mountain and bounced off a couple of trees. I think the local foliage came off worse than me.
One of the guides said I flew about 6 meters.

How’s that for eco-terrorism?

Don’t like those trees?

Launch the chubby Canuck at them.

Ended up with a nasty gash along my side, some interesting colour for a couple of weeks, and a pulled muscle. Thank(insert deity/role model/superstition here) for traditional massage.
I’ve added a healthy diet to my exercise and am showing some signs of progress.
Although it may seem sacrilegious(even to a non-betting man) I have slowed my consumption of beer to weekends only. So far 5 kilos have departed for parts unknown. I suspect they’re lurking and may pounce once this current hysteria for health leaves me.

All the best,Wayne,Emily and Wyatt

From Chiang Mai to Surabaya

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007

I returned from Thailand(via Singapore) on Friday night.
Flew back from Singapore on ValuAir. Good service and landed safe, if a little late.
I was traveling alone, and it’s always difficult being away from family.

I was in Thailand with TEFL International. We were training teachers for their TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages) Certificate. We were in the northern city of Chiangmai.
Chiangmai is an extremely green and beautiful city. The traffic is chaotic and never seems to let up.
The hotel was nice and the area around it had a number of good restaurants. I managed to try a number of ethnic dishes, as well as a wide-selection of international food.

I was surprised how good the Internet connection was in Thailand, and hope that the Indonesian system comes up to that level soon.

We’ve had our course in Surabaya running since 2008.
