Pandas and pedicabs … A trip to Chengdu

Pandas and pedicabs

Pandas and pedicabs
We visited Chengdu last week
A holiday before the holiday
I took a few days so I could spend time with my wife and son and visit a friend
Steve, who taught with me in Jinzhou and Changsha, is now in Chengdu
Nancy,a friend, who’s also the school accountant joined us
Steve’s new school looks very nice … even if it is the competition
Steve was pretty busy so we had dinner a couple of times and a couple of beers
We visited his school and even went bowling with a couple of his teachers
Chengdu is a larger city than Changsha, but surprisingly cheaper
There are many restaurants and attractions
The weather is mild. The food is spicy.
We visited the Panda Research Station about 10Km outside of Chengdu.
We took a late night pedicab ride … not too late
We visited the Faux-Tibetan area. Home of the over-priced, not so genuine, souvenirs
Once we returned home the holiday for National day had begun. It was nice to be able to blend the two holidays. Spent some time with teachers. We shared a couple of dinners, bowling, and an English Corner at a local bar.
English Corners are a unique and troubling phenomena. The concept is that a small group of Native English Speakers will be thrown in with a large group of English language learners. The idea being that everyone will speak English and have scintillating conversations. The reality is questions about food, country of origin, and age – over and over again. Some people actually think that this will be a benefit to students and bring in new students. No and no.
Now the English Corner at the bar. Organized by our senior teacher, it was a way for the bar to offer a night of English entertainment and for the teachers to get free drinks, except for myself. I rarely drink whiskey so chose to buy a beer for myself. We, the teachers, made the rounds. We talked with students and were engaged in sober and drunken dialogues about the weather, football, and origins. Capped off by the ultimate question, “Do you like China.”
Hopefully it brought the bar some business.
The next night we went bowling.
We did not include students or wannabe students, just the teachers, Emily and Wyatt, and Ashley’s girlfriend Chen Lu.
