Dead Forest

What`s with all the dead treas in the Karkonosze mountains? If someone knows please let me know. When I first saw some from afar on my first hike, I assumed there had been a fire, but then on my second hike I walked through what seemed to be an entire dead forest. It was eerie, like something out of a fairytale or a nightmare. They looked more siler than grey from up close, and they didn`t look nor feel burnt. Is it acid rain?

Hi,
In the 1970s a combination of natural factors (like insect attack and the severe mountain climate) and acid rain brought heavy ecological damage to the Karkonosze. About 610 ha were deforested. About 350 ha of forest is still dead.
