July 20, 2004wimping out
Leaving the Flinders, I headed out to Broken Hill, but just didn't take to it, so drove around the next couple of days until I found a small town called Hay. The night before fiding Hay I had woken up in the back of the car absolutly FREEZING! TC was frosted over, and I knew I'd have to wimp out and find a place to stay inside the next night. In a monster driving day I went out of SA into NSW, out of NSW into Victoria (over the Murray River) out of Victoria into NSW again via Murray River, had lunch in Mildura and then found Hay as the ideal place. Small and friendly, but with plenty to see and do. I stayed for a couple of nights in the Commercial Hotel (a pub) which had a claim to fame the locals were very proud of. Here in Australia they have a show called Australian Idol - and a guy called Sannon Noll (spelling?) won it, and filmed his most recent pop video "Drive" in this very bar. Having never heard of him, I can't say for sure, but hey ho. They had a museum in their gaol, there was a museum about the POW camp (which was actually in the train station. Apparently both Australia and the UK rounded up men they thought could be potential spies and shipped them out to Hay were they spend the following 6 years in a POW camp until their release. PS: During my epic drive, I was searching for Coopers Pale Ale (apart from Banana Paddle Pops they are my only vice in Australia) in most of the towns since leaving SA, I eventually turned back just to pick up some beer before continuing my drive...
