Jaislamer

Problems with the trains arrival (3hours late into the station) meant that the train decided to go no further than Jodphur...

So at about 12noon we disembarked the train and wandered off to find out details of the bus to take us the rest of the way. This was ideal as it gave me time for a nice cup of chai and to stock up on samosas for the 5 hour bus trip ahead. The thing to remember about India is to work on Indian time... 5 minutes can be half an hour, half an hour can be the rest of the afternoon. After just over a week here I am starting to get used to the notion of time their way...
The bus arrived on time, left more or less on time (with the luggage strapped to the roof) and by a few hours into the trip we had an extra cargo of about 20 people on the roof aswell. The scenery was beautiful - you can't experience the passage of towns as well on a train as you can on a bus. The scene changed gradually from farmland to dessert, with lots of extra bus stops thrown in for local transports.
Just before sunset we arrived at our destination - Jaislamer. The old city rises out of the dessert and is built of lovely yellow sandstone rock. View image
Arriving just before sundown gave us the opportunity to see this beautiful city glow yellow in the light and really shine at its best. Checking into our hotel gave the best surprise - hot water that actually stayed hot throughout your shower - a first for me in India so far!
An orientation exploration of the city saw the day turn to night. View image
It seems we are arriving just in time for the dessert festival - tomorrow and for the next few days we are to be treated to events such as the longest moustach etc... a must see!
Tomorrow is a day off for the tour, so I will explore and see more of the locations we are being treated to at the moment... bliss!
The evening was rounded off with the perfect way - beer and a curry at the highest point of the town - with an ideal view of the city below us.
