July 13, 2004Helsinki
If i substract the time it took me to get from the airport to the train station and buy a ticket for the overnight train to Moscow, I had less than three hours in Helsinki. I had never planned to go there in the first place, but the Russian visa took longer to get than I expected, so I missed my flight to Warsaw, and booked a budget flight to Helsinki 4 days later instead. Whenever I`ve thought of going to Finland, it was places up north I imagined, I had no real interest for Helsinki. But when I got out of the train station and into the old town, I was delighted. It`s beautiful, with a relaxed feel, and obviously on the crossroads between east and west. Thinking back those 3 hours meant more to me than 3 days in Moscow, which I liked but not loved. Comments
