Nish, Niš, Nis – First stop in Serbia

We hadn’t planned to overnight here, just visit. Rain dampened our enthusiasm to seek the cheapest accommodation – nearest became a priority, and we had one of our most expensive beds for a while. Buffet breakfast was a bonus, although most of the hot food was gone by the time we dragged ourselves in to the restaurant.
The rebel Serbian skulls still left embedded in the tower walls of Cele Kula were quite eerie. The Turks put them, and hundreds more, as a warning to the residents to behave themselves. Ironically, the tower became a symbol of martyrdom and patriotism. Funny how that goes, sometimes…
