Goodbye Tokyo, Hello Taiko!

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

Goodbye Tokyo!  The plan is to stop back at Mt. Fuji, and stay at the Solar Café for a few days before hitching down to Kansai region.  Mihye was going to come along for a short escape from the city, and to finally see this farm I’ve been talking about for the last couple months.   I packed my bag, mailed a few gifts home, and picked her up before boarding a bus back to Yamanashi.    [read on]

Last Days in Tokyo

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

Tokyo is expensive.  I’ve been lucky enough to have friends offer places to sleep on quite a few occasions.  Other times I stayed in the cheapest accommodations available; internet cafes, hostels, and even bumming it on the metro.  I’ve managed to eat a few free meals, but usually have been dining at the most economic restaurants.  Most of the attractions visited were either free or fairly cheap.  Yet this city finds away to drain my wallet faster than I can feel comfortable with.  At least I’ve had a great time, stayed active and thoroughly entertained.

In part I blame the transportation system.  The Tokyo Subway and JR Lines are extremely efficient and by far the best way to get around town without a motorbike.   However, they are also fairly expensive.  Hopping from one side of the city to the other on a regular basis has ripped my budget apart.  I also blame the vending machines.  They are everywhere imaginable, offering a selection from ice cold electrolyte water to hot coffee in a can.  It is too easy to succumb to whim and drop a dollar here and there to satisfy instant cravings.  Yet, after all I still managed to stay longer than anticipated.    [read on]

True Homeless Style

Sunday, June 3rd, 2007

After the excitement this morning I really didn’t feel too comfortable with my original plan to pass out anywhere public. I called Kanako, and she offered me a place to crash for a few hours. I boarded a train bound for her section of town, but never made it. At some point I fell asleep on the train and woke up an hour outside of Tokyo. I stumbled around the station for a few minutes before finding another train heading back… where I passed out again.

5.6.07 It’s hard to deny that you are alive when you look up to the dawn sky, dancing in the mud amongst the falling rain with a girl named Ai (Japanese word for love) who earlier the night before dropped a hit of acid on your tongue. As surreal as that sounds on its own, once you throw Mt. Fuji being at your doorstep and the contrast of events preceding the moment it is hard to think of any day remotely comparable. [read on]

11.19 – A Walk in the Park

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

Not a single day so far has been a disappointment. Each moment has been drastically different than the last. Today was no exception…

After a late night of drinking and an amazing conversation with Melissa, I awoke around noon. As I came downstairs the sound of whistles and drums began to fill the air Sml speaker. Directly in front of the hostel was a parade/demonstration to change a local law involving child custody rights. Pretty random, but only held interest for so long.

I met with Melissa, who spent the morning befriending a cool girl from Canada named Emily. The three of us decided to find some food. A few minutes into our walk we drawn to the sound of live music coming from the nearby Plaza De La Reina. We found a lot of people hanging out continuing the demonstration that we witnessed earlier. We only stayed a short while… enjoying the beautiful weather, and listening to the sounds Sml speaker of a funk band.

After we found our meal in a sub shop, we decided to head to the Turia Gardens. As we strolled through the park we came across a variety of unexpected locales and interesting characters. [read on]

11.17 – Valencia es un bonita ciudad!

Friday, November 17th, 2006

Melissa arrived from Mallorca with another traveler she met on the ferry; Yoann, a very cool 20 year old hitchhiker from Bretagne, France. He spoke very little English and it was difficult to communicate through words, but the three of us left the hostel after midnight in search of nightlife.   [read on]

11.15 – Madrid Rock Club

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

I think I’m finding myself in bars a bit too much; the one here in Cat’s Hostel has been a great place to meet fellow travelers. Although they are all from different places around the world, everybody speaks some form of English as the primary method of communication. I was hanging out with a cool group of people at the hostel who I met last night, when 2 girls from San Diego said they were heading to a friend’s house party here in Madrid. We all became intrigued, and left immediately.

11.14 – Wrong Place, Wrong Time?!?!

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

WOW! This is really unbelievable… today has by far been one of the best days of my life! So many adventures, cool people, and random surprises have come across my path… all within the last 12 hours of landing. It is almost too hard to process all of the stimuli.

I decided to hang around the set of the “Bourne Ultimatum”. Within the first few minutes I met the entire sound crew, and spent a few hours speaking with them. Kirk, the lead engineer, has been doing sound in movies for 40+ years!  The other two crew members, Ian and Benny were a pleasure to converse with.  Ironically, when I asked them all on separate occasions how they got started, the answer was the same: “I was in the wrong place, at the wrong time!” . Maybe this was my “Wrong Time”. [read on]
