May 23, 2004Melbourne
With only a few nights in melbourne, I wanted to check out the city and see how it felt. My rough plan for now is to head back on out to Melbourne in a little while and get a job and someplace to live for a couple of months and do what I did in Sydney - work, while taking in the sights during days off.. I was hoping to fall for the city - everyone I know who has lived there told me how great it was, so I had high hopes. The place is fab. I loved it. Over 2 days and 3 nights I really havent had the chance to take it in, but from what I have managed to see - its a great place that I really will try to get back to. Melbourne´s Old Gaol: prisoner, cell block H :o), ned`s armour and death mask continuing the Ned Kelly theme, this is where he served his sentence, was hung, and where his old armour and death mask are displayed. Nice. The Shrine of Rememberance in Kings Domain (part of The Royal Botanic Gardens) is a must see. Clever planning means that on the 11/11 of each year (Rmemberance Day) at 11am, the sun perfectly hits a gap in the roof and reflects down onto the shrine in the centre of the floor. Stunning. Each day they use lazers and mirrors to re-create the effect and I was lucky enough to see it for myself. Moving stuff. Shrine Street art in Melbourne deserves a mention: cow in tree, mystery shoppers, and creative adverts. A trip to Melbourne wouldn`t be complete for the British backpacker without the obligitory visit to Neighbours Night me, the girls, and Harold Bishop!. After all the excitment, here are some soothing shots of the city to show how lovely it is: city 1, city 2, city 3, the railway station, random nice building in gardens. St kilda beach at sunset. 3 days just really hasn't been enough. Comments
Wow, stunning photos (the one of Harold Bishop I mean...) you've put Melbourne on the map again for me I think (even though it will be the dead of winter when I get there). Go Seven Stones... Posted by: Snazzy on May 30, 2004 07:02 AMCan't believe you've met Harold Bishop! Sad that Im so impressed by that isnt it ;-) Posted by: Sal on June 1, 2004 09:54 AM |
