Calcutta

After a month in India we were heading for the final stage... Calcutta was our final train together, and we were being seperated into different carriages for the journey.

The booking for the tickets were a 4 and a 6 - without Lisa (our guide) we were to be a 5 and a 4. During the night, disaster stuck and one of the 4 was robbed of her daypack (including passport etc) nightmare. Sleeping through most of the ordeal, I only woke up after the police had been called and her camera had been recovered further along the train.
The following afternoon when we arrived in Calcutta, we stayed together as a group while the police reports were filled in, and complaints made to the relevant authorities. Once getting to the hotel, we had a few hours to ourselves before heading out to the cinema to find an uplifting feelgood film to help cheer us up. The film worked, and the group separated to find the next nights accomodation before their individual flights home or onward to their next destinations.
There was a certain unfinished feel to the tour, and it was a sad note to end on. Despite this, my time in India was amazing, and I was sad to leave the country behind. Tomorrow morning I would be in a taxi to the airport by 6am, and heading out to Thailand. One day I hope to return to India. I wasn't sure what to expect when I left Birmingham a month ago, but the people I have met and the places I have seen were an experience not to be missed. I don't really have a favourite moment - all of it has been wonderful. From the crazy busses to the delayed trains - the cows in the road and the noise of the horns. Indian time can drive you mad, but in a way I wish I had been there for an Indian month - who knows how long that could be?
