A reason for being

Welcome to 'Travels with my Angst'.
A blog about family, travel, living in Asia and working in the education industry. Started in China, and continues now that we're back in Indonesia. We do try to provide some useful esources for travelers and for people intending to relocate. It's a place to learn a little something about the kind of individual who would choose to live overseas. What kind of demented loon(are there sane loons?) would choose to teach for a living?
Perhaps you've come here to learn. Perhaps you're curious. Perhaps you can't sleep.
Welcome.
Come dip your toes into the refreshing silliness that is our little corner of Cyberia.

Lilik Rahayu

July 3rd, 2011

Momma

Lilik Rahayu

Lilik Rahayu and her family

Momma, her sisters, and her children and grandchildren and great grandchildren

On Monday night (June 27th) Emily’s mom suffered a stroke. She was rushed to hospital and was given the customary care and tests. While undergoing a CT scan she suffered a second stroke and entered a coma.

Momma remained in ICU for a few days and then was moved to a private room. Momma never awoke from her coma. On Sunday we had a small family dinner, and on Monday celebrated the birthday of one of her many grandchildren. Momma had been singing with friends when the stroke happened.

She passed away last night(July 3rd,2011), her daughters and a few grandchildren at her side. While we take comfort in the fact that Momma turned 75 this year and had lived a full life, it does little to lesson the loss for her family.

The wake will begin today at the Adi Jasa, and then the ceremony will be on Friday.

Lilik Rahayu is survived by her sisters, her children – Tony(son),Siok Hwa(daughter),Siok Mey(daughter),and Siok Ling(daughter) as well as Sons-in-law and a daughter-in-law, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Happy birthday to friends from my childhood

March 22nd, 2011

An achievement

Turning eighty. It’s been done before, but it seems special when the individual, or individuals in this case, represented youth and vitality for a generation. Never mind that one of them wore a rug … he was still cool. He still is cool.
Yeah, I’m writing about the SHAT and Mr. Spock.
William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy turn 80 this year.
Hokey Smokes, Bullwinkle! Can that be true?
I was six when I watched my first Star Trek episode(Wolf in the Fold) and other than the few visual clues that helped me peg the episode a few years later I didn’t remember much. Later I was hooked. I never wore ears, or a uniform but it was a big part of growing up.
I was always a Kirk fan, but no denying the Spock mystique, or the fact that Nimoy aged more gracefully than his erstwhile commanding officer.
When Star Trek the Motion Picture came out it was a month or so after my first plane ride, and I felt I could identify with Kirk boarding the (The definite article was still in use on Trek then.) Enterprise. That is my badge of geekdom.
Star Trek 2: the Wrath of Khan, brought us to the reality that these guys were aging. The next few movies seemed to be living in denial of that reality.
To see what Shatner and Nimoy have done away from Trek has been gratifying to fans of the actors and performers.
Wishing both men healthy and happy birthdays, and many more to come.

Regards,Wayne

Raison d’être to travel overseas

December 12th, 2010

Top Ten reasons to TEFL

There are various reasons to leave home

We’ll try and focus on a few of the more positive motivations.

Money, adventure, love, experience, health and finally having some photos on Facebook that don’t have weird family members in them.

Money … Bwahaahahahahahahaha.
You’ll be able to live comfortably, but unless you’re in Saudi or the UAE this isn’t the career for aspiring millionaires.

Adventurous souls needed. Meet interesting people and teach them, or be taught by them. Volcanoes, temples, elephants, ancient cultures and amazing food await.

Love happens. You never know who you’ll meet out here.

Experience is the great educator. Whether you stay for a short time or a longer period, there are things you’ll see and do that you’d never know about back home.

Health. It’s amazing that some people sleep better, they eat better, and they’re generally more fitness-conscious when they live overseas. Not having the safety net of familiar and familial surroundings can be daunting at first. For some, it becomes a liberating experience.

Photos of cool places are that much cooler with you in them.
