A reason for being

Welcome to 'Travels with my Angst'.
A blog about family, travel, living in Asia and working in the education industry. Started in China, and continues now that we're back in Indonesia. We do try to provide some useful esources for travelers and for people intending to relocate. It's a place to learn a little something about the kind of individual who would choose to live overseas. What kind of demented loon(are there sane loons?) would choose to teach for a living?
Perhaps you've come here to learn. Perhaps you're curious. Perhaps you can't sleep.
Welcome.
Come dip your toes into the refreshing silliness that is our little corner of Cyberia.

Save the animals at Surabaya Zoo

June 28th, 2013

http://www.avaaz.org/en/petition/Save_the_Animals_at_Surabaya_Zoo

Once a world class zoo, and a place where animals were protected and bred – Surabaya Zoo may be the only refuge for animals on the brink of extinction. Unfortunately, Surabaya Zoo is not able to protect or care for the animals in its charge.

Surabaya Zoo is now a sadly desperate place where animals live in an unclean, crowded and malnourished state. Sumatran Tigers, Orangutans, Elephants, Komodo Dragons, Leopards and Crocodiles are suffering daily.

As individuals, and through a collective effort please show that you care.

Informa Quality

June 30th, 2012

For the manager of Informa Supermal

Six months ago we purchased a sofa from your store. We were very happy with the style and the colour. We brought it home and for six months it has been a welcome addition to our living room. It is the centerpiece of activities, conversations and family moments.
We have made a few purchases from your store and have subsequently recommended your store to family and friends. Due to our previous positive experiences, we were not prepared to be disappointed.
Unfortunately, a little less than a month ago(five months after purchase) we noticed that the fabric had split and was cracking in a few areas. We brought this to the attention of your customer service people. We produced a receipt.
Informa Supermal then sent someone to our home to verify the damage.
We were subsequently informed that Informa did not guarantee its products.
We wish to lodge a formal complaint.
We request adequate repair, replacement, or a full refund.
Your prompt reply is expected.

Regards, Wayne Duplessis

Very disappointed by the customer service at a local furniture shop.
We bought a nice-looking sofa, and after less than six months the fabric has split and cracked in numerous places. We brought this to the store’s attention, along with the receipt and were told that there was no guarantee.
This after they sent someone to the house to verify the damage.
If you have no guarantee or return-policy then why go
through the charade of investigating customer complaints?

An Ideal World(trademark pending)

January 21st, 2012

In an ideal world all English teachers would be CELTA/TEFL/TESOL certified and hold four year teaching degrees. They would all speak perfect American or British English, and be from the USA, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, Barsoom, East Anglia or whatever we designate as a nation of Native-English speakers.
Wouldn’t those conditions be wonderful?
Who would the conditions be ideal for?
For government officials anxious to score points and make quotas, perhaps. Unlikely they help students anymore than the current system in South Korea has benefited anyone … not teachers, not school owners, not recruiters, and not the students in need of teachers.
Students need teachers who are knowledgeable, informed, willing to learn, active and involved. They do not need a particular accent, nor do they necessarily need a degree-trained teacher. Their teacher needs the structure that an intensive teacher-training program offers, especially one that is grounded in current practices and theory and makes use of real classroom situations.

Please inform me of one English major who acquired actual teaching skills in university. Having knowledge of Mark Twain, Chaucer and Cervantes is all well and good, but it doesn’t help you teach a class of 14 year-old 2nd language speakers whose world view is shaped by four hours of Warcraft every night.
It’s time for governments, South Korea, Indonesia and China to wake up and smell the white board.
Students and schools don’t need teachers with good papers, they need teachers who can elicit intelligent feedback, encourage interaction, and motivate good communicators. Train the teachers who are here, and hire those who wish and show an aptitude to teach. Hire teachers based on what they teach like, not what they look like. Hire local and foreign teachers. Cultivate a culture of awareness, improvement and involvement.
If a new paradigm is to be embraced let it be one based on need, common sense and sustainability.
