Cyclo Killer (Qu’est-ce que c’est)

November 18th, 2006

cyclo.jpgIn Saigon, there are these guys, most all are around 50 years old and older, who take people (mostly tourists, of course) around town on cyclos. The bikes are modified so that in place of the front wheel, there is a rickshaw sort of seat for the passenger. The cyclo driver then sits and pedals like he was riding an ordinary bike. Voyeur/Voyee

November 16th, 2006

coadai.jpgTraveling has presented a strange dichotomy of existence. Let’s take today’s events for an example: The visit to the Cao Dia temple. From our balcony perch about 100 tourists observed a few hundred Cao Dia devotees going through their noon rituals at their temple. Camera flashes strobed the service, and for some reason a lot of French and German tourists seemed oblivious that their loud talking just might be inappropriate considering that a religious service was taken place just below us all. “They” – the locals were on display much like they were in some human zoo as if from a Kurt Vonnegut novel. Saigon

November 16th, 2006

I spent the day on a packaged tour – cost me all of $5 (not including lunch and entry fee) and went to a town near the cambodian border and visited the Cao Dia main temple…the religion is as a concoction of taoism, buddhism, christianity, and
islam… Read the rest of this entry »

Otres Beach, Cambodia

November 14th, 2006

otres.jpg‘Squeezing it all in’ is a reality – So much to do , so little time. Sometimes there’s simply not enough time to really enjoy one place. We found this gem of a resort about 15 kms out of Sihanoukville, but only had one night to savor the spot. Star Bar Bungalows set us back $8 for the night – there were just 2 other people at the place and we had the entire beach to ourselves that night.

I suspect that in a year or two, this place will be very crowded. For now, because it is a bit out of town and the road to it is in bad shape, it is a find. Read the rest of this entry »

Southern Cambodia

November 14th, 2006

kompot.jpgAfter leaving Phnom Phen, we spent a few days in Kompot, a small regional capitol in the south of Cambodia. On our first day, I rented a morotbike and we weaved our way to Kep, a nearby town that is mostly bombed-out remains of French colonial villas. Read the rest of this entry »

Sorry about the lack of Pictures

November 14th, 2006

I do have 2 big excuses. The first is that the internet connections are mostly very slow or computers that I have been able to use are old and don’t have photo editing software. The big reason is that usually I really don’t have but a few minutes to get things posted – and getting pictures online does require time.

Trust me, I will bore all of you folks back home with a slide show of my time in this part of the world!

Phnom Phen Water Festival

November 12th, 2006

water.jpgAs you may have gathered, getting around in Cambodia isn’t always easy. But that’s one good reason to do it. It was fairly easy to escape Siem Reap and catch the bus to Cambodia’s capitol city. We took a government bus – the ones the locals take. At least those who can afford the riel and escape hanging on the roof of a shared van ( I saw some with 10 on the roof and lots jammed inside). Read the rest of this entry »

Angkor Wat

November 5th, 2006

aw.jpgWe arrived in Siem Riep a few of days ago and have been spending a bit of time at Angkor Wat and some other nearby temples.

All of the ruins are quite outstanding of course, but I think this will be one of many travel experiences that produce photos more impressive than the actual sense I had when there. Read the rest of this entry »

Crossing the Border into Cambodia

November 1st, 2006

bb.jpgWe are in Battambung, Cambodia right now – some 150 kms from the Thai Border. Crossing the border at Poipet was one of the most bizarre travel experiences I have had – and I am very glad that I am writing of that experience in the past tense and am no worse for wear from the ordeal. But there will be some good stories about it when i get back. The road out of town is quite possibly even worse than the drive to my lake house back in Soldotna – but some 90 KMs of dodging cows, bicycles, motos, trucks, pedestrians, and potholes big enough to swallow a chevy suburban.

Cambodia is a big change from anything I’ve seen so far on this trip -more 3rd-world like conditions. Tomorrow morning we will take a boat downriver to Siem Riep and will stay there a few days to explore Angkor Wat. Should be a highlight of the trip.

Bangkok

November 1st, 2006

bangkok.jpgStreet hustlers, shady tuk-tuk drivers, insane traffic, noise…we were in bangkok for all of 24 hours and were delighted to leave. I’ll be back here at least 2 more times as the city is a hub for SE Asia. Did get to see the Grand palace – good photos, but those shots certainly exceed the actual experience. Travel is like that sometime. Maybe I’ll be able to post some pictures soon – but we are on the go a lot right now and only can log on to the internet between stops and events.
