Southern Thailand

November 1st, 2006

pp.jpgAfter crossing the Malaysian border into Thailand we took a shared taxi to Krabi and then arranged to take a ferry over to Phi Phi Island – the site of the Tsunami 2 years ago. The island has nearly rebuilt from that disaster, but I don’t think it has been a good thing. It’s completly crawling with tourists and crowded accomodations. We were able to find a resort on the far side of the island however, and enjoyed our time there. There was some great snorkeling right on the beach here.

Singapore and Malaysia

November 1st, 2006

sing.jpgSingapore lives up to the effecient reputation that it has – everything is quite orderly and there’s a very controlled chaos that happens here. It’s not as spic-and-span as I had heard and I was j-walking along with the locals at every possible opportunity. But it is a very easy city to navigate, get food, and sight-see. The photo is an art-deco style building that was right across the street from our hotel.

Jan flew in and met me here – it was good to see someone from back home!

We took the train to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia – and we were able to observe a side of the country that would be hard to see otherwise. We took a quick stop in KL and took the metro to the city center to see the Petronas Towers: Outer space meets Asia. It’s quite the impressive structure. It was closed to the public however and we weren’t able to see the city from the towers. Quite unfortunate.

Kakadu

November 1st, 2006

kakadu.jpgFlew up to Darwin around the 18th of Ocober and took a 4-wheel drive tour of Kakadu Park. Quite spectacular – although I was there at the very end of the dry season, so not much water in the falls. saw some good aboriginal rock art, and yes, some very big and nasty salt water crocs…

Our 4WD Toyota Land Cruiser got bogged to the frame crossing a sand pit and the driver didn’t know how or want to use the winch. But it was the only thing that got us out. I’ll try to post some pics, but I usually don’t have time to do that as I travel.

Avoid this Company

October 22nd, 2006

whitsundays.jpgI try not to have too many expectations in life – it’s too easy to be dissapointed if reality doesn’t quite match what you had hoped for. Often, by having expectations of how a particular thing should be, you become blind to what the experience does present, and that could be unfortunate if the experiences are valuable. But sometimes things are just plain crappy – and my dive/sail charter with Tallarook Dive Company out of Airlie Beach was not a good experience. Read the rest of this entry »

Coastal Queensland

October 22nd, 2006

koala.jpgIt’s been a while since I updated the blog – I suppose that’s a good thing as it means I’ve been busy.

And I have been, so here’s a quick update. I’ll try to post some photos in a couple of days.

After leaving Cairns, I hired (rented in America-speak) a car, and spent about 2 weeks heading south along the eastern coastline.

My first stop was in Yungaburra, and I stayed at On the Wallaby, one of the better hostels I slept at so far. I did get to see my first platypus – kinda cool. They were feeding in a near-by creek. Rented a canoe and did a night-time float and also saw some tree kangaroos and a ring-tailed possum. Read the rest of this entry »

Diving the Great Barrier Reef

October 10th, 2006

dive.jpgI enrolled in a 5 day scuba certification class this last week. 2 days in a pool in Cairns, and then 3 days/2 nights on a boat out of the GBR. It was a most excellent adventure. The diving was incredible – the colors and the variety of the coral reef was beyond belief and the thousands of fish certainly added to the experience.

Did 9 total dives – including one night dive. The 6 AM dives were brutal to get up and prepared for (wet neoprene at 6 is never fun), but the early morning dives were my favorite as you could see both the night and day time life. My waterproof camera casing sprung a leak – so when I do post photos, they will all be boat pictures). Read the rest of this entry »

Cairns, Australia

October 10th, 2006

This is a backpacker’s dream town. But let’s spend a minute defining ‘backpacker’. It’s the term that is applied to the legions of young folks traveling around on holiday. Here in Cairns, it’s party central for these folks. The street culture here is centered around these self-centered youngsters. The bars are open late and all have various take-offs on wet T-shirt nights, or other gimmicks like toad races. One place has a contest for female backpackers to strip to the waist and then paint the flag of their home country on their chest. Read the rest of this entry »

In Search of the (Holy) Mackerel

October 2nd, 2006

The Lure of Jesus and Mary

The 2 most desired fish on Badu (not counting crayfish) are Coral Trout and Spanish mackerel. The SM has proved elusive. For the first part of the week, it’s been the Jesus lure that has brought in the most fish. Julie and Dave have tried a succession of different apparatus – but with little luck. Jesus was named because it had been lost after a battle with a mackerel – but then miraculously floated to the surface – resurrected. Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day – teach him to fish and he will drink beer.

Then along came Mary. Not the mom, the girlfriend. Definitely no virgin. She immediately took on the bad boys – barracuda and sharks. But she welcomed them all – trevally, tuna, trout. Read the rest of this entry »

Badu Island

September 26th, 2006

badusset.jpg
David, Julie, and I have been camping on Gao Buth (Gao Beach) for the last 4 days. It’s a stunningly beautiful place. It’s mostly a sheltered bay that is rimmed by a horseshoe arc of golden sand lined with postcard-perfect palm trees. A few islanders have holiday homes out here, but it’s spring break and we are the only ones around during the day. Some former teachers who are on the island visiting have been out to have a drink and watch the sunset a couple of evenings… Read the rest of this entry »

Blog crashed

September 26th, 2006

badujulie.jpgHey…

If you’ve been checking my blog, you have noticed that there has been some problems – this server crashed, and all of the New Zealand postings might be gone forever. It’s back online now – but all of the stuff posted in September is gone (for now) I ‘ll see what I can do about getting a new version online…

I’m on Badu Island in the Torres Strait right now, visiting David and Julie, who are teachers here. D& J did a year teacher exchange to Kenai, Alaska in 1993 at the school where I was teaching at the time…

Here’s a shot of Julie at the Badu airport
