Cairns, Australia

This is a backpacker’s dream town. But let’s spend a minute defining ‘backpacker’. It’s the term that is applied to the legions of young folks traveling around on holiday. Here in Cairns, it’s party central for these folks. The street culture here is centered around these self-centered youngsters. The bars are open late and all have various take-offs on wet T-shirt nights, or other gimmicks like toad races. One place has a contest for female backpackers to strip to the waist and then paint the flag of their home country on their chest.

No – I didn’t check this event out. Anyway, what happens in Cairns, stays in Cairns.

I did go to the Woolshed, one of the more notorious backpacker bars, last night. The other guys in my diving class met up for a few beers in town – Nikki, our instructor, came along too. She had a pass for reduced prices for drinks, so that’s where we went. There’s little floor splace, so everyone dances on the table tops.

I kinda felt old and out-of place. I was the first of our group to leave.
