Best football holiday destinations

Tuesday, November 18th, 2014

Going away on holiday is one of the best ways of removing yourself from the stress and pressure of everyday life at home or in the workplace, and immerse yourself in new surroundings which have so much to offer. Europe is packed with picturesque landscapes, idyllic scenery and famous landmarks which can create many wonderful memories for single travellers, couples and families to savour. For football fanatics, they may feel that they do not have to leave their own country to experience their favourite sport in all its glory, but travelling overseas offers a unique taste of how other countries approach the game and the euphoria they create. Different countries exude their love and passion for the beautiful game in all kinds of weird and wonderful ways as part of their culture, but opening your eyes to experiencing football in Europe is an opportunity not to be missed. Many games can be too close to call, but backing one of the teams you go to watch play can add to the excitement and memories of going on a football holiday in Europe.

Barcelona

High temperatures, excellent weather and historical landmarks make Spain one of the most popular holiday destinations for millions of holidaymakers, but travelling to Barcelona should be any football fanatic’s dream. From trawling down Las Ramblas to seeing Barcelona Cathedral and other gothic basilicas at first hand, Barcelona is a city steeped in history with wonderful architecture and sights for every holidaymaker to appreciate. It is also home to one of the most prestigious clubs in world football, with Barcelona making a habit of winning trophies ever since their founding in 1899. Many famous names have represented the club over the years, but having the opportunity to watch Lionel Messi, one of the best players to ever play the game, at first hand should not be passed down lightly. Watching Barcelona play their infamous tiki-taka style of play is a joy to behold, and is fitting of a wonderful 99,786 capacity stadium which creates an electric atmosphere. If you are unable to afford a match ticket, then a stadium tour of the Nou Camp is equally recommended, with football fans able to delve into the rich heritage of Barcelona and their unrivalled success, in addition to looking at awe around an iconic stadium.

Amsterdam

Holland is a country enriched in culture and heritage, with Amsterdam remaining one of the most popular European cities for tourism. Although there may be more allure reasons why so many people travel from far and wide to the city, Amsterdam is not short of iconic sights with the church of Saint Nicholas and Westerkerk examples of Renaissance buildings which reflect Holland’s culture. The city is home to Ajax, one of the most successful club sides in world football with a combined total of 71 trophies since they were founded in 1900. Frank De Boer’s current team have continued the club’s tradition for success and play a brand of football that any football tourist would love to see at first view. The Amsterdam ArenA is often used for music concerts in order to increase tourism in the country, but football fanatics can join in with passionate Ajax fans who sing and dance from first whistle to the last.

Munich

Germany have taken a dominant hold of domestic and international football in recent years, with the former showing their muscle in European competitions that teams in other countries simply cannot match. Bayern Munich are undoubtedly the shining light in German football at present, with Pep Guardiola’s side looking almost unbeatable as they look to continue their rich tradition of winning trophies wherever they play. German football has been praised due to the wonderful match day atmosphere created by passionate fans who take full advantage of excellent match day ticket prices to sing their hearts out and get the stadium rocking. It therefore makes logical sense to consider Munich as a potential football holiday location, although the city has much more to offer away from football. Classical architecture and iconic landmarks surround you wherever you go in Munich, with the Frauenkirche and New Town Hall highly recommended sights for any football holidaymaker who wishes to immerse themselves in the culture, food and scenery of Germany before sampling an unbeatable match day atmosphere.
