Night Bus

Remember when we took a night bus from Tulum to Palenque, in Mexico? I do. It was glorious. Movies, fully reclining seats, and a solid 8 hours without a stop. We were so chipper the next day that we toured Palenque and two different waterfalls. Those were the days.

Today, however, after 12-hours of riding buses from hell, my eyes are sticky, my mouth is dry, and I feel like I’m about to die. And this is all after coffee. Remember all that talk about this being one long vacation? I don’t anymore. Every two hours, we passed a police check point. Five hours into the journey — 2:30 am — we crossed the Ecuador/Peru border and were forced to drag ourselves on foot across a mosquito-ridden bridge and have our passports stamped at three different little offices. Why three? There are only two countries involved. I guess we can’t complain too much though, because this was the only border we’ve crossed that didn’t ask us to pay a fee for the privilege of crossing an imagined divide between two imagined communities. Close All Borders! End All Occupations! Smash the State! Damn the Man! man.

That said, we’re safe and sound in Peru, Chiclayo to be exact. We’ve decided to drown our sorrows and our sticky eyes in a big screen movie this afternoon. We’ll let you know how it is if we don’t fall asleep in the middle.

Oh, and please, if anyone has any advice on what to do with the camera problem, leave a comment here or in the previous post. It’s getting super frustrating.

Wow, that night bus sounds awesome. Just to let you know, I will NOT be taking any 12 hour night buses when we are in Bolivia. YAY I am going to see you in 3 weeks! Ok, one suggestion about the camera problem. This will probably only work if you are in a big city. When I was in La Paz, they had these photo developing stores where you could give them the memory card from your camera and they would make a photo CD for you. It might not work, but it’s worth a try if you can find a photo store that does digital photo stuff. Welcome to Peru! Have fun! See you soon! Alison

I googled trouble shooting digital cameras and one recommendation was 8. Transfer the image files using a memory card reader.

If the camera records images to a removable memory card, use a memory card reader to transfer the image files to the computer. This can help you isolate the cause of the problem to the camera or to the memory card.

If you can’t transfer the images from a memory card, the memory card may be the cause of the problem. If you can transfer the images from a memory card, the camera may be the cause of the problem.

    buy a new camera???

if 10 people on the blog pitch in 20 dollars? Ok, don’t know how that would work as Peru is along way to pitch to… any maybe that’s a wasteful American response anyway (self-rant, self-rant).

Hey, I’ve got 20 bucks. No advice for these delicate matters of high tech photography but I do pledge a night on the town for a replacement tool. I miss the pictures! I’m dying to see if Megan ever replaces her green t’shirt and takes off her hat. Connie is in Cancun on business but gets back tomorrow. She might actually understand your dilemma and offer anther solution.

    Meanwhile…
I have a horrific and yet wonderful story about a bus ride I once took. Didn’t go over a mosquito ridden bridge however, and some memories are best shared over a bottle of wine. Remind me to tell you the tale when we have occasion to share a glass…

For the record, I have only 2 t-shirts, and I wear them both about half the time. My hat I can’t help, since I’m currently sporting a hair cut that Sarah gave me.

We haven’t figured out the camera yet, but we’re this close to buying a new memory card. (Doh!)

    Thanks for the advice.
