December 04, 2004Tres Chopitos
A friend from home is visiting and we decided to travel to Sevilla to watch some of the Davis Cup action. His roommate in the states is an agent to players on the US team. Unfortunately, we had a 6 hour bus ride on Friday morning...even worse for us though, Thursday became a very late night. So, with no sleep, we made it to the bus station by 7:30am. After wandering the streets of Sevilla for a few hours, we found a hostal. Then, it was time to explore. First lesson learned...you need a map. Very old city with tons of tiny little streets and alleys. They all seem to loop in odd directions. With tired feet we started sampling some of the food. Discovered various bars and restaurants and did our best to hit them all. Next up...dinner with some of the parents of the Davis Cup players. We arrived late and they had already sat down. We ordered and sat around with some red wine talking. I think there were two separate points in the conversation where I was asked by different people, "So, what are you going to do when you grow up?" I felt like saying, "Fuck off you arrogant bastard." Instead, I answered more diplomatically with, "Who says I will ever grow up?" Now, as for the meal itself, I can´t say I was excited when they brought out the black rice paella. Basically, it was the least visually pleasing food I have ever eaten. It was a huge tray of rice and seafood that looked like it had been scooped out of the ocean right after the Valdez went down off the coast of Alaska. Seriously, it looked like someone dumped 3 quarts of motor oil on it right before it came out of the kitchen. But, you know what they say about judging books by their covers...it was delicious. Extremely tasty and for anyone coming to Spain, I recommend it. Then again, I´m still shocked it made its´way into my mouth. Then, we said goodbye to the parents and around 1am or so three of us wandering into a club here. After paying to get in, we headed to the bar to order some drinks. Me, always the bad influence, ordered a round of shots (chopitos) too. Then, much to my delight, I found out that they were only 1.50 €. After 2 rounds of shots, the next conversation went like this... Me: "Warren, time for another round of tequila." Me: "Yup, it´s go time." Comments
