George Bush and Sangria

I feel like Morpheus just gave me the red pill and showed me that I am living in the Matrix. Did the Yankees really lose 4 games in a row to the frickin Red Sox? I feel like that possibly couldnīt have happened and itīs just a big joke everyone is playing on me here in Madrid. But, if it did happen, I think I found the silver lining. Watching game #7 in an Irish pub around 5am something great happened. It was towards the end of the game. There was about 250 Americans there. Fans had been yelling at each other back and forth all night. Then, a chant broke out that everyone could agree on. "George Bush sucks". I swear to god, it wasnīt me that started it either but it was music to my ears. But, as a result of staying to hear some enlightened opinions on Bush from fellow Americans and because I happened to imbibe some spirits along the way I ended up at class a little boozed up. It happens.

On to the sangria. Last night I sampled the sweet nectar that is Spanish sangria. I went out with a friend from Miami who is latin american and fluent. He lives in a residence with some native spanish women and we met them out at a bar.

Has anyone seen the movie "Canīt Hardly Wait"? If so, think of the scene when the geeky kid infiltrates the keg party, gets a beer, and after tasting it spits it out on people and yells "nobody drink the beer, the beer has gone bad." Well, the music stops and everyone in the party looks at him like he has lost his mind and they know he doesnīt belong there. That was me last night, minus the spitting (but with a little yelling...old habits die hard). I walked into this place and I swear to god the music stopped and everyone was staring at me for 10 minutes like I was a rare animal in the zoo that they had never heard of before. I was the only non-native spanish speaker there. Every table was packed and the only drink being served was sangria. I tried it and like they say, "once it hits your lips.....itīs sooooo good!" I drank 917 glasses of it, give or take. If Bush had been able to sample the sangria back in his "days of indiscretion" maybe we wouldnīt have to deal with that idiot ruining the world now. Lots of "what ifs" out there...

After that, they took us to a spanish hip-hop place and then a spanish club. Every so often a song like "In Da Club" would come on and (in keeping with the "Canīt Hardly Wait" theme) I would think to myself "I know this song!". NOPE. They just use the beats we know, the lyrics and the entire song is different, and in Spanish. Once again, like the chameleon that I am, I seamlessly blended into my surroundings. Those of you who have seen me on the dance floor know what I mean. Mercifully, the girls called it quits and let us leave. I plopped into bed at the reasonble hour of 7:30am. Just another day in the life...
