November 01, 2005Wealthy China
Trev and I have noticed the significant amount of disposable income in and around China (and Qingtian is not free from it). There are now so many cars in Qingtian they are building a central carpark for people to garage them - you may say what is the point when you walk past your work to get your car to only drive it back to your work location but this is exactly the significance of what I'm trying to get at. The one child policy is the latest to become even more fraught with controversy as wealthy people merely shrug off the fine for having more than one child. What I understand of the one child policy is that minority groups are allowed more than one child and so are farmers if their first child is a girl. And anyone who is a government worker, which pre WTO days was the place to be will lose their jobs if they have more than one child. Now city slickers are going around the buoy more than once for the status of prestige. http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/english/doc/2005-12/16/content_503972.htm Comments
