September 07, 2005Father's Day
My best friend here is Wang Wei Hong, she is an art teacher at school and can't speak much English yet we get along well and have a good laugh at each others expense. Her husband is one of 'the men' his name is Wang Jiang Dong. It's normal for women to keep their maiden name when they marry here yet this couple had the same surname and they quite like being called The Wang's. Wang Jiang Dong is funny man, his face turns beet red as soon as he has a sip of beer and in the past I had felt sorry for him when the drinking gets out of hand and everyone starts 'ganbei'ing each other. I only found out the hard way that he doesn't feel any pity on me when I am getting a full firing from the men. On Sunday it was Father's Day in Australia and Mr Ye (the man who can say only one english word and that is full) invited the big group of us out for dinner. Nearing the end of dinner I was asked when my Dad would be arriving in Qingtian. I answered and in passing said it was Father's Day. Well 9 men at the table, Trev the only one not a father I had to drink to all my Chinese fathers individidually not once but twice. Yes that's right 16 skulls of beer at the end of a heavy night on the booze, let's just say it was an interesting trip home. Comments
hello Jo! I like hearing what you are up to. Do people in China have their surnames first (trying to follow the stories of the Wangs??)? Your wee care is very dusty, started well and did 2 laps of my driveway without any hassle. Will keep in touch, off to Perth on 25th September for 2 weeks.
