Roman adventure

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Sunday night saw us dining in candlelit style.
We were transported back to Ancient Rome and dined on roast chicken pheasant, chicken peacock eggs, stuffed chicken dormouse and less exotic things like dates and olives, marzipan cakes and roast pork.
Ever since we studied Ancient Egypt…then Greece…then Rome…then the Middle Ages….and the Renaissance and Reformation….and that would be a few years ago now….we have been talking with friends who studied with us about *doing an ancients dinner* (the boys had visions of lying back on couches and being fed grapes – heehee, dream on lads, didn’t you notice the servants in the books were all male??)

You don’t need to go to Rome to make a memory or create an adventure.

But when (if) we get there, I’m sure we’ll all remember this Roman dinner!

chopsticks anyone?

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

It’s altogether possible that for the first six months, a dozen chopsticks is all we’ll need.
So we by-passed the fancy-schmancy ultra-light with inversely-proportioned-pricetag cutlery sets at Kathmandu, and opted instead to pick up a knife-n-fork when the need arose.
But when I happened upon some teeny tiny forks (yes, they are the same size as the teaspoons) at a local thrift store, I decided they wouldn’t be a bad buy (four pieces for a dollar) and over the next few weeks we picked up enough for everybody. So now we’ll be able to take our favourite muesli and a tub of yoghurt to the airport at six in the morning for our final Kiwi breakfast on take-off day.

And we’ve got a mini-knife to boot (only one knife, but we’ve got ten spoons and ten forks – didn’t they share a mug in Little House on the Prairie?)
