The First of the Month

Monday, October 2nd, 2006

We had sold every piece of furniture in the apartment but one. At 2 am on Sunday, the day of our departure, it became apparent that we were not going to sell our couch. This could be because it was missing a leg or because it was horribly, horribly stained. Who knows. At any rate, there it was; we had to deal with it. We entered stealth mode, sneaking the 3-legged couch out of the door and walking it down the street. Since it was Saturday night in the Mission, we walked it past not a few unsavory characters. Halfway down the block, to our joy, we saw a handmade sign that read “Free Stuff.” Perfect. We could make this person’s dream come true. There was a colander and a desk lamp below the sign already, so apparently someone else had also answered the ‘free stuff’ call. We dropped the couch and ran.

Five hours later, we emerged from a nearly-all-night packing spree. Walking to the car, we found that our couch had already been claimed. It was tipped on its side, someone was sleeping on its back, and our beautifully stained cushions lay atop the sleeper, tagged by a local gang. It was definitely time to move. And move we did.
