Transportation in Japan

The public transportation system in Japan is probably the best in the world.  Everything is efficient, timely, clean enough and comfortable (except during rush hours).  Unfortunately, the whole system is extremely expensive.  It is no problem getting to and from any place to place, but you can expect to spend dearly.

The subways are great for getting across town, but usually the cheapest hop is at least ¥200.  Your best bet is to walk or get a bicycle if you plan on staying in any city for more than a week.  In addition to money you will save, it will also give you a better perspective of the city and remove the limit from the subway schedule.  The fact that the subway is closed from midnight till 5am is also a deterrent from staying out late and partying with the Japanese at their most uninhibited and friendly states of mind.

I had a bit of success hitch-hiking, but it is definitely not a good idea during the rainy season (June-July) and probably not a safe option for solo female travelers.
