Lhasa, Tibet!

Sunday, November 4th, 2007

Lhasa, the capitol city of Tibet; former home to the exiled Dalai Lama and now conquest acquisition of the Chinese Government.   Ive only been in town for a week, but in this short time it is still possible to glimpse the deep cultural history of the Tibetan people and witness the affects of the domineering Chinese assimilation.  While it may not be possible to fully understand the cultural and political situation, the Lhasa prefecture offers a variety of interesting adventure and other diversions for a visitor.    [read on]

Character Development

Monday, August 13th, 2007

Five months deep into this adventure has taught me more than I could have learned in five years stagnating at home. I do know I am still far from an experienced traveler, but it is safe to say that I’m at least no longer wet behind the ears. It has been almost a month since I left the comforts of Gangneung, and I’ve found less and less time at a computers to update this blog.

So what has been keeping me so busy? Life… the way I want to live it. The weeks I’ve spent in Seoul kept me preoccupied with friends, playing music, taking photos and visiting the must see sights. I also took a twenty-five hour ferry into China and have been exploring Beijing for the last few days. Now I’m sitting in a quiet pavilion hidden in a secluded corner of Temple of Heaven Park and have pulled out my journal for the first time in weeks. [read on]

Goodbye Gangneung

Friday, July 27th, 2007

The last two weeks in Gangneung have been like a vacation from traveling.  Hanging out with Melissa and her friends at the beaches and suburbs was reminiscent of a summer at home.  It has helped me to shake a bit of funk that has been building up during the last four months on the road.  I was getting a little disillusioned and burdened by time limits and dwindling finances, so it was great to live a stressless life with no real agenda for a change.  A lot of my time there was spent wasting time in internet cafes and playing with the kids at Melissa’s school, but I did get into a couple photo explorations during my last week in town.    [read on]

The rising sun after Ground Zero

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

Yesterday was the one year anniversary of Ground Zero, a live house (music bar) that I’ve been frequenting.  Played about four sets throughout the night, took a few great photos, drank excessively and generally had a good time.  I’m not going to verbally elaborate much more, so here are some photos.    [read on]

A Walk in the Park II: Yoyogi-Koen

Saturday, May 26th, 2007

Since the internet café didn’t have a shower this time I started my day heading to Roppongi to find a cheap sento (public bath only… not a full fledged onsen) recommended by Lonely Planet.  The ¥400 sento turned out to be closed, so I broke down and used the upstairs onsen for an outrageously expensive ¥1280!

I was even more surprised to find that this place was an overpriced dump, unlike the elegant onsen I found in Yamanashi!  The faucets hardly worked; if it wasn’t spitting out scalding hot or freezing cold water it wasn’t working at all!  The sauna and bath were both unbearably hot.  I couldn’t stand more than a few seconds of it before getting out and regretting the shocking sum I spent to endure this unpleasant experience.  Please heed my advice and avoid the Azubu-Juban onsen like the plague.  It is overpriced, dysfunctional, and if it will give you the worst impression of this sacred part of traditional Japanese culture.   [read on]

Washington D.C.

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

Life keeps changing. Tangible plans are present one day, and the next they are shaken up by unpredictable variables. I’ve become very used to this unstable set of circumstances, and although it’s cliché to say it is apparent that as one door closes another opens.

Everything fell apart with the cruise line, but it has hardly fazed me. There are a few bids on my house right now, and it looks like I may be able to start my RTW trip sooner than imagined. However, this time around I’m not making any plans until the final paperwork is in hand. In the interim, I’ve felt it’s best to spend as much time exploring my own country as possible. Last week I took a short trip down to Washington DC to work on some music with my friend Pravin. [read on]

Philadelphia

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

A couple days ago I had to go down to Philadelphia to get a physical for the cruise line and a few other things. I live about half an hour from Philly… so why am I posting this? Cause I brought my camera and got a few cool pictures and panoramas to share with everyone that hasn’t been there… enjoy!   [read on]

New York City: Opportunity Knocks

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

12:30 – Hamilton, NJ – It’s been exactly one month since I’ve returned from Spain to US soil. My wanderlust has been far from quenched, and I yearn for the day I can leave this dull town once more. My house, the key to my impending freedom, is also the very rope that ties me to this place. So today I’m bound for New York City. It is not only a day trip and diversion from the monotony of life in Hamilton, but also a step towards cutting this metaphoric rope.

I have an interview with Norwegian Cruise Lines. I figure if I’ve got to sustain my property any longer, I might as well be doing it in style[read on]

11.19 – A Walk in the Park

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

Not a single day so far has been a disappointment. Each moment has been drastically different than the last. Today was no exception…

After a late night of drinking and an amazing conversation with Melissa, I awoke around noon. As I came downstairs the sound of whistles and drums began to fill the air Sml speaker. Directly in front of the hostel was a parade/demonstration to change a local law involving child custody rights. Pretty random, but only held interest for so long.

I met with Melissa, who spent the morning befriending a cool girl from Canada named Emily. The three of us decided to find some food. A few minutes into our walk we drawn to the sound of live music coming from the nearby Plaza De La Reina. We found a lot of people hanging out continuing the demonstration that we witnessed earlier. We only stayed a short while… enjoying the beautiful weather, and listening to the sounds Sml speaker of a funk band.

After we found our meal in a sub shop, we decided to head to the Turia Gardens. As we strolled through the park we came across a variety of unexpected locales and interesting characters. [read on]
