New York City: Opportunity Knocks

12:30 – Hamilton, NJ – It’s been exactly one month since I’ve returned from Spain to US soil. My wanderlust has been far from quenched, and I yearn for the day I can leave this dull town once more. My house, the key to my impending freedom, is also the very rope that ties me to this place. So today I’m bound for New York City. It is not only a day trip and diversion from the monotony of life in Hamilton, but also a step towards cutting this metaphoric rope.

I have an interview with Norwegian Cruise Lines. I figure if I’ve got to sustain my property any longer, I might as well be doing it in style

… um… ok…

I got the job. Although they didn’t have any immediate openings for entertainment/sound jobs, apparently I was deemed suitable to fill a waiter position. Pending a physical and merchant mariner’s license from the Coast Guard, I now have a job in Hawaii!! That works fine for me.

I will I live on board a cruise ship for five months, traveling between the islands of Oahu, Maui, Hawaii, and Kauai. All my living expenses are covered, and everything I earn makes it’ way into my savings. I do have to work seven days a week for the entire assignment, but I get to look forward to a thick bank account and five consecutive weeks of vacation!

Somewhere in the process I may be able to network myself into a more suitable entertainment job, in which case I’ll probably stick on board for a couple years. If not, I’m hoping that my house sells during the assignment and I can then take my RTW trip.

Either way, this seems like a great opportunity to do something unique and rewarding. If I didn’t have my mortgage as an expense it would be a great way to save up a RTW bank roll. For everyone who can’t find a way to finance a trip of that nature, you should look into this as an option!

After the interview I wandered around New York City for a little while. It is nearly Christmas, so I spent some time at the massive tree in Rockefeller Center. I had my camera gear with me and got a couple cool shots of the city at night… including a few 360° panoramas.

What a glorious day! Thanks for the adjective Heidi, it’s truly fitting!
