Week 4: The USA

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

I can’t believe we have been on the road for four weeks.  I find myself trying to remember everything and then panicking when I think I have forgotten something.

Tatey got the chicken pox today.  But we’re not stressed.  All we have to do is keep him comfy and away from the other children for about five days and then we’re home and dry (as long as Torien doesn’t get it :-()  He is for the most part still incredibly cheerful, if a tad on the snotty side.

We are loving the RV – although the driving has been pretty hard on Torien.  We have travelled about 3000 miles so far and seen many, many places.

Last week we visited Graceland – this is without doubt one of the most memorable experiences of my life.  I felt a little foolish walking around with a tissue but I found the tour moving and so very, very enjoyable.  We stopped later that evening in Beale Street in downtown Memphis for a meal – it’s a really vibrant and amazing town.

After Memphis we drove a mammoth 1000+ miles over two days to get to Santa Fe in New Mexico.  Wow, this place is amazing and so different to the lush, humid south.  We’ll spend a few more days here and then head off to the Grand Canyon and then onto LA for a Disneyland and Theme Park extravaganza.

I won’t lie and say it hasn’t been stressful at times but I’d not change one single thing.  We are learning coping techniques for dealing with a stroppy five year old and have learned (very quickly) that the best time for travelling with little children is in the early hours of the morning when they are sleeping.

If you ever wondered what it would be like to do this, take a chance.  I promise you will not be disappointed.

I’ll be back after Disney.

The RV – New York to Washington DC and beyond

Thursday, May 18th, 2006

So we fetched the RV on Saturday the 13th.  Great stuff, I hear you say.  Well that’s what we thought until we attempted to leave Long Island and get into New Jersey.  We have never encountered worse roads, worse traffic, highways that you get stuck on.  We got given directions to get to the Verizano Bridge to cross from LI to NJ.  The cab driver who gave them to us forget to mention that the main road we were to use was for vehicles no higher than 10ft.  Our RV measures up at 12ft – it was a hair-raising Griswaldish (National Lampoons Vacation) experience.  But we survived.

We have since got used to the RV – it’s fairly spacious and we are comfy and more importantly so are the kids.  Well they were until…

Caelan developed Chicken Pox!!!  Tate is just coming down with it and Torien has never had it, so will in all likelihood get it too.  Poor old Cael spent his 5th birthday miserable as sin, covered in a zillion blisters and trying his best to put on a brave face.

We are still having a great time though.  We visited Washington DC, and today have driven to the more westerly part of Virginia (Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive) – it’s an absolutely stunning part of the world and what’s more, the camp we are staying in has WIFI :-).

Everything is good, although the kids are ill, we are handling things just fine.  The park we are staying in for the next few days is breathtakingly beautiful.

The end-of-day Budweiser has been a little more appreciated than usual over the past few days but I wouldn’t trade this experience for the world.

Signing off for now.

New York Sightseeing….

Thursday, May 11th, 2006

In the last 48 hours we have seen:

Downtown (three times) including everything below Times Square, been to see the Statue of Liberty, Ground Zero, Brooklyn at night, the Empire State Building and to be honest I am now well and truly knackered and had my fill of Roof Top Bus Tours.

It has been another amazing day for our kids – they have enjoyed the day with us far more than I ever imagined that they could or would.  We took the children to Toys R Us on Times Square this morning to buy a gift for them with unused birthday and xmas money.  Caelan chose a Starwars Light Sabre and Tate chose (or we chose for him) some building blocks and a talking book.  I took them on the indoor ferris wheel – it was expensive at $12 for three tickets but worth it.

We were out and about for thirteen hours today.  There wasn’t one tear or tantrum which had absolutely nothing to do with good or lucky management but rather two amazing little boys.  I looked at our oldest tonight, happily playing with his light sabre on the tour bus and I actually shed a tear – I am so proud of him.

Ok, gush over.  We are off on Saturday  morning to fetch our RV (in some far flung part of Long Island.  Will update from tehre.

New York – Day 7 & 8

Day 7

And a very tiring day it has been, but we are finally here, The Big Apple…Hee Ha
We couldn’t have had a better day, we were up from 5am and you are probably wondering why that is fine, well we got packed up, fed the boys brushed their teeth; inevitably leaving something behind, this time it was our toothbrushes. Nonetheless the boys got to say goodbye to their friends, I think that both boys found life long friends in Taybah, Reem and A’lyah who has turned into the most wonderful young lady, with a golf swing that I envy not having.
The taxi driver rang the bell as we were heading downstairs, if I had any doubts that this was going to be a good day that put that to rest. After we had gotten our now already bulging bags into the taxi we were off to Paddington station where we took the express train to Heathrow, hmmm… there was something scratching at the back of my mind…’when were the wheels going to fall off’, it had to be the train, no? We all know that London trains have a reputation of never being on time, it was either going to be the tried and trusted, ‘there are leaves on the track’ or the usual ‘there is a train stopped in front of us’ well neither of these came booming over the intercom, in fact I was almost surprised that the train driver never got out of his cab to wish us on our way.
So what next, Ah, the flight, well it was the furthest docking bay in the entire terminal 4, you know it is far when there is a sign saying, ‘please allow 20 minutes to get to platform 24’, but this didn’t bother me, in fact on a day like this nothing was going to bother me, the boys were angels, although we had to clip their horns every now and then. To cut a long story short, the next minute I find myself with Tate asleep in his backpack, Caelan passed out in Tate’s buggy and Stella and I enjoying a walk down Broadway…even the customs officials at JFK were fantastic, taking time out to coo at our lovely children…

It is amazing that when you begin to stress out, everything conspires against you, from the toast being burned to stubbing your toe; it is all going to happen… There is a lesson here, but I will let you draw your own conclusions.
 Day 8

Tick Toc
It is lunchtime on our fist morning in New York, another early morning loomed; we were up from 5.30 this morning, to a rather dull day outside. We are staying in the WooGo hotel on W65th street, a couple of blocks from Central Park, where we have spent our morning. Both Stella and I have agreed with the boys that the mornings were theirs and that the afternoons would be set aside to see the sights. Well the morning has worked out well; we even took in the children’s Zoo, although I had to sell it as the zoo in ‘Madagascar’ the movie. Well that worked, by association, the boys had a ball, even Stella and I have found something new, ever heard of a “Red Panda bear”, well they say they have everything in New York, now I believe them.

Settling into London

Tuesday, May 9th, 2006

The Dad is back, finally…

It is late Saturday afternoon, week one is grinding to an end; I am struggling to keep from blinking, afraid that we will be back at our front door and our dream trip has ended. Already I find my thoughts turning to, “how’s” and “why’s”; will we fit back into a daily routine along with all those other souls that wonder about aimlessly in the dark, ignorant to the world around them.
We have just arrived back from Orpington, Maida Vale (North London) is cold and the rain has just started to fall, Tate has just fallen asleep in his buggy, strapped to the top of his car seat; cowboy blanket in hand and my now rather sodden NY cap over his head. It has just hit me that I am truly happy, relaxed and taking all that life has to offer me in stride. Neither rain nor moaning, moping children could dampen my spirits, how far I have come in so short a period of time. I think that my enthusiasm is highlighted by the fact that we are so close to being on the road, just the four of us. London has been a home coming in many ways and has left me with a lot to ponder, I have missed the smell of the Lush shops, the taste of a 1000 chocolates; I have missed being me.
Stella is taking it all in her stride, don’t confuse confidence with busy, for it has been that, the boys have been hard work, it has been hard on them, Caelan is already making the adjustment to the road, although unsure of the roads to travel he is taking it in little steps; Tate doesn’t quite know what to make of it all, but both boys are just happy to have Mum and Dad by their side.
Tomorrow is another day, but for us it is off to New York the city that never sleeps… lets hope that we can sneak in a couple of hours…

London 1nd May 2006 – 8th May 2006

Saturday, May 6th, 2006

We arrived in London on Tuesday 2nd May.  Nothing has changed and it seems as if we have never been away.  I love this place!!

It was really lovely to get settled at our friends place, and great to see them too, of course!  It has been great for the kids to have other children to play with.  We moved on from London to our old home town for a few days and spent some time with old friends and investigating old haunts which was lovely.  The particular friends we stayed with are so hospitable and we felt so welcome all round.

Caelan got to spend the day with the childminder who cared for him when we lived in London, he had a fantastic time and was very spoiled.

Overall – the weather has been marvellous, we haven’t spent too much money (slightly over budget because Torien was insistent that we kit the children out in England football shirts).  The kids have been amazing.  They are sleeping well (Tate has a cold so was a bit wakeful last night).  They have been going to bed without fuss in strange beds and have been so beautifully behaved, we really feel blessed.

Today is our last day in London before we leave for New York.  I’ll update from there.
