Eyes Wide Shut

Maybe itīs me and maybe itīs because I never lived in a big city before, but are there always this many blind people walking around? Should I be worried about some chemical in the drinking water that is going to make me go blind?

I see like 3 blind or semi-blind people every day. They are just walking down the street taking a stroll or waiting in the metro for a train. They have those big sticks and are waving them around haphazardly. They have their pitch black, Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith Raybans on. They walk in diagonal lines. Take last night for example. I walking home from class, it was about 9:45pm. I hear "bam, bam, bam" and I look down the street. Sure enough, some guy in sunglasses, swinging a stick that kept hitting garbage cans. I had to laugh and I donīt care if that means Iīm going to hell. Chances are, I would end up there for something else anyway.

Some even cross the street on their own. I swear to god, Iīm not lying!! I saw one guy do it the other day. I was fucking shocked! As a car hit him and he hit the ground I thought, "oh my god, call an ambulance." But, in a few short seconds, the old man bounced right up and was on his way. I remember thinking that I should get more calcium in my daily diet...just in case.

Then, the other day, I thought I figured it all out. I remembered in Jackass how they liked dressing up as old people and pulling off crazy stunts. I was walking down the street, in a rush, to the metro. I had to get to class. About 40 feet ahead, walking towards me, was a shrivelled, old, blind man swinging his stick wildly. I thought to myself, "oh uh. Why do I have a bad feeling about this one?" I start making my plans early to avoid him. I start moving towards the street, he does the same. I pivot back towards the buildings and he cuts off my escape. After the collison, I picked him up, dusted him off and apologized. After he shook the hand of the woman next to me, I realized that he really was blind...

In all seriousness, there are a lot of blind people here. Either that or I live in a blind neighborhood and just donīt know it.
