September 17, 2004The City
Zhaoqing is about 2 hours west of Guangzhou (the captial of Guangdong) and will be our home for the next 5 months. It's a lot bigger than Qingtian in size and population. With this there are also a lot more mod cons. Discos and supermarkets are among the more obvious things. The city has been built around 7 star lake. It's a huge lake with some crags, which are meant to be similiar to Guilin. Sadly they are not. But the city itself is still quite clean. At some stage in the past it was a walled city and parts of the wall still stand. The city is a mix of old and new, and the people here seem a lot more westernised than Qingtian. I am actually finding this quite difficult. To a certain extant it doesn't feel like China, but then the difficulties and frustrations are still here to remind me "You're still in China Jo!"
