Yesterday Trev and I ventured out to Si Hui, a small place about an hour from Zhaoqing. It was good getting away together. We noticed a lot more of the countryside than we normally do in a bigger crowd, and were very pleased to see it is strawberry season again. The bus went passed Hulu Mountain, where I thought it might be an idea to stop there, but on the way back. I really wanted to get my bearings before doing anything like getting lost. About 10 minutes later we passed a sign that read "Si Hui - World Famous for Oranges and Jade". We had arrived. We jumped on the back of motorbikes out to the mountain and had a great time wandering around. I managed to drag Trev to two more temples before the day was out. I've got this thing for temples, as Sumo can attest. And I dare say for someone who is not at all interested in them it could shit you to tears. My favourite thing at the moment are these copper or bronze pots filled with water. You rub the handles of the pots with the palms fo your hands to cause the pot to vibrate and this causes the water to "dance". It's a fun little thing to do at the temples and doesn't cause a scene as much as banging a drum or striking a bell. These last 2 things normally attract a lot of attention - "Crazy Gwei Lo" We climbed some hills and had a good view of the surrounding scenery. A lot less polluted than Zhaoqing. As we headed back into Si Hui to catch the bus Trev decided we should buy some strawberries. We were both very keen. As I remembered the word for them in Mandarin I started the questioning "Do you have any strawberries?" Stifled giggle "What strawberries - NOOOO. I have oranges!!!" Of course every little store had mountains of oranges but nothing else. Comments
