January 11, 2005Adventure Holiday
It seems there is a new guest house opening in Xing An in the next month or so. It sounds great and I believe they will offer a range of activities to make your Chinese holiday experience even better. Xing An is in Gaungxi Province about 60km to the north east of the well known city of Guilin. While most people head to Yangshuo from Guilin (like we did in July), why not try Xing An. Some sights around Xing An include the Li River, Mao Er Shan or "little cat mountain", Ling Qu (an ancient canal) and the Leman Geological Scenic Zone. The other fascinating part about Guanxi is the province is actually called "GuangXi Zhuang Autonomous Region," for the 15 million Zhuang who live there (about 1/3 of the population), forming China's largest ethnic minority. From my understanding staff will be both Chinese and Laowei so communications won't be a hassle. I'm keen to get out to Xing An and have a look myself. Although Yangshuo was great it was a little too western. I'd be very interested in what Xing An has to offer. If anything I imagine it will make you feel like you've ventured a little off the beaten track. Here's a detailed map of where Xing An is in comparison to the rest of Guangxi. Apologies for it looking so cluttered.
