July 22, 2004Moon Hill
Yesterday Sumo, Trev and I hired a guide "Bono" and went for a ride out to Moon Hill. Bono is learning English and was a fantastic guide, he took us out of town through the rice fields of Aishang Village. We rode along almost non existant roads and saw the locals at work. Having never really seen rice we stopped and had a better look. Sumo and Trev decided they'd have a taste of it raw. It basically looks like long grass and then you have to crack open the seed like eating watermelon or sunflower seeds. We kept riding and about an hour later popped out on the highway near Moon Hill. Yangshuo is surrounded by "karsts" and Moon Hill is so called because near the top is a semi circle cut out. The locals say it looks like a moon. An amazing figure we were told yeaterday is there are 25,000 karsts in Yanghsuo county. A karst is basically a lime stone mountain. You'd expect riding around here to be tough but there are so many of them you just ride in between them. Comments
