Getting to know the locals

May 24th, 2005

I must preface this entry with the fact that I am typing on a French-Arabic keyboard. The author takes no responsibility for the horrendous spelling and punctuation that may take place.
So…
As much as I enjoyed the first few days here, Joey and I realized we really hadn’t meet any locals.

Moroccan Whirlwind

May 23rd, 2005

Where to begin? Surely the begining would be a good place…but I have little notion of where that might be now…so much has happened in the last few days!

Alhambra (Now with photos!)

May 17th, 2005

Right about now it´s a travesty that I can´t post photos! (EDITED)
I visited the Alhambra today…beyond gorgeous!
Alhambra.jpg
(Seen from below)
I spent 5 hours taking it all in, wandering the palace, relaxing in the gardens and taking more photos than any one person should…film AND digital…I´m such a dork.
Map2.jpg
(The map at the entrance shows exactly how large the site is!)
I´m seriously flustered that I can´t share some of these images with all of you. There is little in the world that can compare to the spectacle of this place: countless tiles, endless patterns, intricate plaster work, peaceful courtyards, gorgeous views, perfect gardens…and rushing water everywhere, the quiet music of the palace.

Pomegranate

May 16th, 2005

Okay, so I´m still learning my spanish vocabulary, but it finally clicked that Granada means pomegranate. I have a strange affinity for pomegranates…they´re just so yummy. (Can someone magically teleport me a bottle of POM juice…please )
Also, my favorite mythological story involves pomegranates: Persephone´s trip to Hades. (BTW -hi Tom! my mythology guru)

Winding Down

May 4th, 2005

So time here in Barcelona is winding down. I´m quite ready to move on, hit the road and really start the journey. I´m feeling a little staid here at the moment. I´ve never spent 5 weeks in one place that wasn´t New York.
I´ll be heading out of Barcelona on Monday, on a really cheap train to Valencia. (I´m only a little curious as to why it´s half the price of other trains since it runs in about the same time frame…but I think it´s because it´s no frills: i.e. no dining car, etc.)

Picnics

April 27th, 2005

I’ve become a master in the art of picnicing. Almost every day contains a picnic here or there.
Sunday a group of us went to the Parc de la Ciutadella for a lazy afternoon in the sun. There happened to be a huge festival going on, though we bypassed most of it to find a quieter spot on the edge of the mayhem. A sunny green lawn by the Cascada (a three or 4 story set of stairs with a central cascading fountain) became our nesting spot. We had the benefits of sun and shade and were close enough to the action to catch the music. A picnic of bread, cheese, fruits, veggies and cookies unpacked, we passed the time chatting, reading, sunning, sleeping and playing hackey sack. (I haven’t played since high school…and it’s easy to tell, but I’m getting better.)
