I Ordered What?

November 27th, 2006

In a town called Joenju, I wandered into a non-descript Korean barbeque restaurant. The proprietress, after seating me at a low table in my very own room, rushes me to a decision by pointing to an item on the menu that was displayed on the wall. I had little choice but to nod, as yet incapable of deciphering Korean. I had no idea what I ordered…oh boy!
I sat on the floor eagerly, if somewhat warily, anticipating my first sit-down Korean meal. I was certainly in for a treat.

I saw the sunset in Tokyo….

November 27th, 2006

I feel as though I’m floating though my feet are, in fact, moving beneath me. I am ecstatic about being in Asia and everything seems like a daydream. It could be exhaustion / jetlag…I’ve been awake for more hours then I can figure out mathematically and the sun is just setting on what may be the longest day I’ll ever see.

Anyonghasayo!

November 9th, 2006

Or hello…Korean style. Good thing I know this sentence…everyone says it about a million times a day…and I got to impress a huge group on Kindergarteners…

Journey to Korea…

November 5th, 2006

Tomorrow morning I shall be headed to Korea, only my second foray into Asia, and I’m terribly excited. I’m not sure I’ll even be able to sleep tonight.
I am making the long journey (some 20 hours of travel time) in search of work and culture on the other side of the world. Read the rest of this entry »

Hookers and switchblades…

October 26th, 2006

My second trip to the Dominican Republic was quite pleasant: hot sunny days (a far cry from the chill that has descended on NYC), relaxing on the beach, cultivating the best tan of my life, catching up on some good books, letting the sudden, crazy rainstorms wash over me, practicing Spanish, dancing under the stars, sipping rum, and meeting great people.
But the last night offered something very different. Please reference the title of this post…

Blog Issues

October 26th, 2006

Forgive the appearance of my blog at the moment. The company that supports my blog has switched programs and everything is screwed up at the moment. I hope to be able to fix everything but it seems like a daunting task of dealing with posts going back to February 2005….especially when every apostrophe has turned into a question mark and I have several hundred photos to resize and repost.
Also…it seems I may be stuck with this boring color-scheme…which I am none to happy about. I’m trying to get my banner back up and colors changed but not sure it’s going to happen.
I feel like the wind has been taken out of my blog’s sails, and am completely bummed with the state that it’s in.
Will update on my progress soon…
On a higher note…I just got back from the Dominican Republic (again) and am super tan and relaxed…if not chilly in the NYC fall weather. Yesterday: sun and palmtrees, 85 degrees. Today: Grey and windy, 55 degrees. Brrrrrrrr.

Off Again…

September 13th, 2006

I’m packed and ready to go…which is easier and easier with every trip. My bag for 2.5 weeks is size of a nerdy junior high-schooler’s bookbag.

September 6th, 2006

I’ve now posted stories and pictures from my fabulous trip to the Dominican Republic.
For once, I wrote my entires before hand…which may lead to a little confusion. Usually my site reads from the bottom up…but this time I’ve posted the entries in chronological order, part 1-5, this being part 1…the last being part 5.
Go ahead and read from here down and follow my little trip. Hey…keep reading if you haven’t seen the site lately.
I hope you enjoy reading this even one hundreth as much as I enjoyed this trip…at least a little anyway.
Cheers,
*Liz

DR Part 2 -The vacation of a thousand showers

September 6th, 2006

At breakfast, on my Santo Domingo hotels lovely fourth floor terrace, the butter melted. By melted I dont mean softened and was easy to spread, I mean melted into a slick yellow puddle. It was 9:30am.
Needless to say, its hot here.

DR Part 3 -On insects, shoe-shine boys, “hooker chic” and Spanish…

September 6th, 2006

I’ve learned two new Spanish words (at least). 1) Hormiga, which means ant. 2) Picadura, which means bite. Now, put the two together.
Oh, how the insects love me! I’m just sweet, what can I say? I am speckled with bites, as I often am anywhere there happens to be bugs of the biting variety. It started right away: my first night in Santo Domingo my bed was full of ants. I couldn’t figure out what was itchy because they were so small, but they were there. And oh man, they were biting!
Now, on to other Dominican things…
