thank goodness for that

Did you know that the WHO accepted level of immunity for rabies is 0.5 international units per ml (IU/ml)? Nor did I until today.

We have just been notified that the boys’ levels are 1.4, 1.4, 1.5, 1.8 and 1.8.
The girls raced away with the top scores: 2.8, 3.6 and 3.8 (the two little girls didn’t require testing, but I’m sure their numbers would be up there too)

Of course that is not a license to go out looking for wild dogs – we’d still need another two shots if we did get bitten, and if rabies does develop it’s fatal. But at least we’ve bought ourselves a bit of time to get to a medical facility, a handy thing when we’ll be out trekking who-knows-exactly-where in Asia and a couple of days from civilisation on a ranch in Mongolia.

but how far exactly?

Now you can find out with this nifty little distance calculator. There are separate calculators for places within Great Britain, Europe, the USA and World Distances.
This very handy tool doesn’t just tell you how far it is if you’re a crow, but assumes you are more likely to be travelling some other way and provides you with driving times, train journey lengths in addition to the number of road kilometers (so if you’re on a bike you can work out how long it is going to take you (for the record, two weeks to get from Amsterdam to Krakow and another two weeks to get to Rome – if you rode 100km a day).

Hopefully this will be useful to us one day 😉

or how about…..?

blood on the carpet

Monday, August 25th, 2008
Most of us were lucky enough to have the intradermal rabies jabs - lucky I say, because they were "only" $60 as opposed to $180 a pop for intramuscular ones (and we needed three each - yeah, ... [Continue reading this entry]

the power of the list

With six weeks to go, The List is keeping my head from spinning out. Here's this week's:

  • *purchase underwear
  • *burn lots of candles so they don't need to be packed away
  • *drop off ... [Continue reading this entry]

Had our very first plans for this trip come off, we would have been in China by now. Along with most every other tourist in the world. But I suspect we've seen more of the Olympic ... [Continue reading this entry]

chopsticks anyone?

Sunday, August 17th, 2008
It's altogether possible that for the first six months, a dozen chopsticks is all we'll need. So we by-passed the fancy-schmancy ultra-light with inversely-proportioned-pricetag cutlery sets at Kathmandu, and opted instead to pick up a knife-n-fork ... [Continue reading this entry]
