Sledging

I love this place, I really do. Just in case you aren’t satisfied exploring the natural scenery by boot, bike, or boat the Kiwis have created endless opportunities to birth some squeals in odd and unnatural ways.  I spent the last couple days in Rotorua–a North Island town for melding natural thermal wonderlands, Maori cultural shows, and thrill sports.  The menu includes sky diving from 15,000 ft., bungi, riding luge carts down the mountain, and rolling down a hill in a huge plastic “Zorb” filled with water.

Although the Zorb definitely held novelty appeal, I ended up signing up for whitewater rafting on the Kaituna River, known for its 7 meter waterfall drop.  However, once in the office, a typical impulse decision drove me to upgrade to “sledging.”  For sledging, you ride the rapids tightly clutching a plastic sled.  It’s a much more in-your-face, up-your-nose, and in-the-washing-machine way to ride the river.  Very very fun.  Couldn’t help but think of rafting in Alaska last summer wearing fleece pants, jacket, dry suit….  wonder why sledging hasn’t taken hold there??; )
