Fortune cookie

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

My fortune, peeled from the finish of a wonderful lunch with my mother and sister yesterday, read:

YOU WILL SOON BE CROSSING GREAT OCEAN WATERS FOR AN INCREDIBLY REWARDING EXPERIENCE.

And so I will. Crossing them for 12 hours and 45 minutes tomorrow between LA and Aukland.  As for the experience, I expect nothing less. 🙂

Farewell old friend (she says with a shrug)

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

I kissed a dear friend goodbye today. Over the past 11 years:
–we have traveled through 39 states together
–shared tears, snacks, stories, and the same musical taste
–recovered from various bodily injuries (seldom serious, usually my fault)
–touched the butts of some nice attractive males
–sat in silence together to enjoy scenery, forget stress, plan the future, or figure out the day.

She never yelled when I spilled coffee on her, but she could be a bit passive-aggressive, letting me know her disatisfaction with whines and squeals and grumbles. I gave her money. Quite a bit actually. But today, she finally paid me back some of it before she took off down the street with a young Russian guy, never to be seen again. That’s Ok. I am the one who hooked them up through the following “personals ad”:

1996 Toyota RAV4 Love this car! – $3500 OBO Moving out of country or I’d never get rid of it!! 140,000+ miles, ski/bike racks, CD player, 4-door, 4WD, ABS, cruise control, air con., manual transmission. Kelley Blue Book value $4200+. Discounted for cracked windshield and window that doesn’t go down. Some cosmetic blemishes but engine runs great and it is fun to drive. Need to sell by Feb. 28th; if interested, please call ASAP. Asking $3500 cash or will take best offer by Feb. 26th. Ask for Cindy.

Yes, it’s true.  Most of you thought that NO ONE would ever buy that car for more than $500, but turns out “people love RAV4’s in Russia!”  My dad’s response (as it is to many things):  “You lead a charmed life.”  🙂

Life is a Slinky

Several years ago a friend (who was more than a bug in her past life) told me, "Some people think life is circular, but I think it's actually a spiral."  Well, under that metaphor I ... [Continue reading this entry]

Cornfields, freetime, and numb toes

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007
I can't stand it. Only reporting on adventures around the world and brushes with strangers isn't fair; my time here and the people in it are worth too much to leave them out of my writing because it seems too ... [Continue reading this entry]
