Life is a Slinky

Several years ago a friend (who was more than a bug in her past life) told me, “Some people think life is circular, but I think it’s actually a spiral.”  Well, under that metaphor I can easily picture mine as a Slinky careening haphazardly down stairs.  But I think the idea is that you return to the same places, faces, and situations, but never with exactly the same perspective.  My recent “return to the South” qualifies as part of this dizzy cycle.  For example, Hattiesburg has gotten much bigger but the things I remember are quite tiny (how can that “mile-long walk” to school only be 4 blocks?!)   As the pics testify, it’s not just perspective that’s changed, but also family sizes and hair sizes.

First I visited my friend Sarah in Cape Coral Florida.  Sarah—my college roommate for two years—helped coin “splash therapy,” was responsible for getting me out of bed when we rowed crew, and has always seen the bright and silly side of life better than any other person I know.

My next stop:  Hattiesburg Mississippi (where I grew up) to see my childhood friend, Wendy then to New Orleans for Mardi Gras.  Wendy—voted by our highschool English teacher as “Most Likely to Keep Cindy in Touch With the World”—is the non-family member who’s known me the longest and therefore has the most incriminating memories for blackmail. Whether it was getting in trouble for laughing at a tiptoeing teacher, skipping town for the “Egyptian Lover” concert, or drinking Keystone in a field, Wendy was there.  (Still debatable who was the bad influence on who.

Alright, I am accepting defeat; I can’t figure out how to get these pictures larger and clear.  So, you can use your imagination–or magnifier–when viewing.  I do have more roadtrip pics on “My Photos”: www.flickr.com/photos/bimpygo
