Election Special and the Sacred Valley

Sunday, April 2nd, 2006

I’ve been recovering from my rafting trip, still have a few bruises but they look impressive so it makes me seem more hard core! Anyway I have had a great 3 days in Cusco before heading off to the Inca trail tomorrow! I came to Cusco a bit earlier and was worried I was spending to much time in one place but its been cool to spend awhile somewhere and get to know it. The Peru elections are happening next week so for the last 2 nights there have been these crazy huge demonstrations in the Plaza (the main square), there heaps of police around in riot gear and it makes me a bit nervous! But interesting to watch. My hostel is on a hill with a great balcony and view of the city so its fun to watch it all.

I’ve spent the last 2 days just walking around, confirming all my trek stuff and yesterday I found a market! I love markets….it had all these juice stands and cheese, chocolate, fruit and veges, meat (made me a bit sick looking at all the huge steaks), places to eat and clothes and stuff. I got a bit carried away and after buying avocados. mangos. bread, cheese and chocolate I thought I better leave! very fun though and ate very well that day. There’s some cool people in my dorm, 2 guys from oz and an American chick so we went out for dinner and to a few bars.

From RTW 06/07: Chile, Peru, Bolivia

I didn’t stay out too late though because this morning I got picked up at 9am for this tour of the sacred valley, which is a valley full of ruins and villages. It was a bit painful being in a bus `and on your left we see….´ but still interesting. Went to this huge market in a place called Pisac (did I mention I love markets?) I brought an alpaca hat, gloves and socks so now I can be toasty warm trekking. Also brought avocado and bread for lunch (20 cents for the biggest avocados) and corn with cheese, and some more crazy fruits I’ve never seen before. We also went to these huge Inca ruins, although full of tour groups like ourselves, it was pretty impressive and good to have a guide explain stuff. We also stopped at a church which had more Inca ruins.

Bit worried I’ll be over Incas by the time I get to Machu Pichu! There were some people on the tour that are in my trekking group. so it was cool to meet them. I’m just off to get some dinner and then early night for a 5.30m start tomorrow! You´ll hear from me on Thursday if I made it or not!
