Tampa Underbelly v. Clearwater Beach

May 29th, 2006

What do I like better – Clearwater Beach in/near Tampa or the Ybor City? Most people I hear visit Tampa on a Business trip. I was on the other hand lucky enough to be living close enough for a trip every long weekend 🙂 Yeah Yeah !

Anyway, I love both – the beach as well as Ybor City. So, here is how I would suggest you plan your trip. First of all, Read the rest of this entry »

What??? Join a timeshare island tribe in Fiji ???

May 28th, 2006

This caught my attention today. Quote”

Memberships — Nomad ($220), Hunter ($440) and Warrior ($660) — entitle members to seven, 14 or 21 days on the palm-fringed 200-acre oasis, 100 at a time. Fees cover food, lodging and local airport transfer. ”

Really, sounds like an adventure for the extremely bored. I really like traveling to new places for the experience of the somewhat real world. This on the other hand sounds quite contrived. Read the rest of this entry »

Riding Elephants in India

May 27th, 2006

I have always been amused and sometimes scandalized to hear people in the western world ask me if elephants and tigers walk the roads in India. Pardon my smugness but I find the prospect hilarious. Infact, one person even asked me if there were cars in India. Hmmnn, how do you suppose a country of 1 billion plus people travel? More on that later.

For now, I want to talk about riding elephants in India. I can understand to some extent where these questions come from – elephants are exotic to most countries and specifically alien to several continents including the american and european continent. So, the answer to the hidden question is Yes, you can get a memorable elephant ride when visiting India, but NO, elephants on the roads are not a daily occurence across India. More like cows and goats on the road, and yes, sometimes, a bear in a cab :). I will recount that hilarious incident soon, sometime. For now, let me tell you how you can plan for an elephant ride, because its just not randomly going to happen.

Now, if you want to squeze in an elephant ride on your trip to India, Read the rest of this entry »

Al Capone & Miami Duck Tour

May 25th, 2006

Two areas we covered on the tour that I really liked was the 1) Millionaire’s Row, where the rich & famous hollywood stars and basket ball stars live, and 2) the Art Deco District, the snitzy area in Miami, famous for many things, including Al Capone, the famous gangster, ran his gambling business in the days of yore and also where Gianni Versace was shot dead on the steps of his home – Casa Casuarina. Miami Duck Tour however was a disaster. First of all, the tour guide, an old geezer, claimed to be from England. Apparently, he had moved to Miami two years back. Great. I did NOT want to be entertained by a Rookie. Culture Shock in India?

May 24th, 2006

Everybody who travels to India, especially from the West, should expect to suffer through Culture Shock. With a Capital C.

First of all, there is the big East side of the world versus the  West side of the world cultural divide. Then, even within the Asian region, India is an apple among oranges. You will never be adequately prepared to deal with the diverse region. Whatever “tips” you might have read may be applicable when visiting the Taj Mahal, but not when you are in the Rajesthan desert on a caravan or boating Keral backwaters or hiking the Himalayan mountains or visiting the temples in the south. But I do recommend some “Don’ts” and some “Do’s”. Ready ? Okay, here we go :

1. Advice one – never visit India on a shoe string budget. You will be miserable through out the trip. Comfort comes relatively expensive. If you travel on a lean budget, then you will have to lead a lean life. And a lean life in India is way leaner than than most places else. You will not be able to deal with it. Very few can – Commandos can 🙂 . I most definitely can’t.

2. Advise two – Read the rest of this entry »

Exotic Kuta Beach, Bali

May 22nd, 2006

There is a party of a different kind happening on Kuta Beach. Bali is an Island paradise, eastern, exotic and full of sweet beautiful Balinese people and crazy tourists. What smacks you right on day one are the Legong performances on the beach. We saw one while we were eating dinner on a beach side restaurant.

The beach itself in the morning is very touristy, and be careful, vendors selling Sarongs and all will Hound you if you even as much as glance their way. The vendor food is great, I have a cast iron stomach, so I don’t even think half a sec before I order. Our hotel was just across the road from the beach – in an alley. What you must do on Kuta Beach are:

1. Wake up leisurely in your hotel room, surely its the thing to do if you want a true Balinese experience. You can not be hyper on your Bali vacation – it clashes with the theme of the trip.

2. In that frame of mind, sit on the hotel room balcony, take the scene in, balmy trees, nice breeze, an Indonesian breakfast of Goreng, and a nice book to read, something racy preferably 🙂

3. After a while, go down to your hotel pool – they are wonderfully Balinese, with water spouting from the stone sculptures placed in the water. Laze around in the water, order a drink and enjoy the sun. I felt like a queen 🙂

4. Get a MASSAGE – don’t miss this step. This is a must, if you are sensitive, ask the lady to be gentle. Myself, I like the deep tissue massage I get, so I am already in heaven by now. Nap for a while. Read the rest of this entry »
