Exotic Kuta Beach, Bali
There is a party of a different kind happening on Kuta Beach. Bali is an Island paradise, eastern, exotic and full of sweet beautiful Balinese people and crazy tourists. What smacks you right on day one are the Legong performances on the beach. We saw one while we were eating dinner on a beach side restaurant.
The beach itself in the morning is very touristy, and be careful, vendors selling Sarongs and all will Hound you if you even as much as glance their way. The vendor food is great, I have a cast iron stomach, so I don’t even think half a sec before I order. Our hotel was just across the road from the beach – in an alley. What you must do on Kuta Beach are:
1. Wake up leisurely in your hotel room, surely its the thing to do if you want a true Balinese experience. You can not be hyper on your Bali vacation – it clashes with the theme of the trip.
2. In that frame of mind, sit on the hotel room balcony, take the scene in, balmy trees, nice breeze, an Indonesian breakfast of Goreng, and a nice book to read, something racy preferably 🙂
3. After a while, go down to your hotel pool – they are wonderfully Balinese, with water spouting from the stone sculptures placed in the water. Laze around in the water, order a drink and enjoy the sun. I felt like a queen 🙂
4. Get a MASSAGE – don’t miss this step. This is a must, if you are sensitive, ask the lady to be gentle. Myself, I like the deep tissue massage I get, so I am already in heaven by now. Nap for a while.
5. Now finally is the time to cross the road and hit the beach 🙂 Truly ! if you miss the previous steps, you are just on a regular island on a regular beach. There is no point in taking the flight to Bali !!
If you have interest in water sports, like surfing, scuba diving or something for lesser mortals like me – banana boats, snorkeling, parasailing, jet ski, there are specific places you need to go to. We simply asked our tour guide to take us to the best place – good thing to do for the uninitiated. Multitude of things to do in Kuta beach area – including shopping in the evening and the bar scene at night. It is possible to bar hop as there is a whole area where you can make your way through bars.
If you are on a longer trip, then there are other beaches – Nusa Dua, Legian to name a few. I personally would after Kuta go straight to Ubud.
Ubud is the “cultural center ” of Bali, where the Ubud palace and its nightly performance are. I saw the Legong evening performance there. Batubulan village is where I saw the famed Barong performance. On our way back – bought a Ragda T-shirt. I know, awful of me. Keckak was quite a performance too. Do not sleep though the drive from Kuta to Ubud. Take a tour guide staffed car to tour around Ubud region for a whole day – see the temples, the wood carvers, silver smiths, painters. I love the paintings – the one I liked most was $600 though, so buying didn’t work out 🙂
Overall Bali for me was a short trip from Singapore, but beautiful 4 day experience. Recently, my parents visited Bali. While I was looking things up for them, one souce that was really good for reference was – you guessed it – Baliblog.com !
