1. INDIA

Hi, I have traveled extensively in India and have lived in a new city every two years. I can immodestly claim that I have traveled more of India than an average Indian.

Average Indian is just a turn of phrase because, to contradict myself, such a thing does not exist. In a country with  22 OFFICIAL languages (but a total of more than 800 languages and 2000 dialects), it is instantly impossible to have a typical Indian.

This attempted typification is further complexed by the varied cultural traditions, habits, garbs, and cusine in each of the 28 states, 6 Union Territories.  Not to forget Polarizing Metros and countless cities and millions of villages. Each state is different and trying to talk about India in one breath is as incredulous as thinking of Europe as one nation. Also, as a matter of pride, Indians like to flaunt the different religions that are followed in India. The majority group is Hindu, true, but this landscape may change region to region. There are atleast 8 major religious groups in India, including Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, Buddhism, Jainism, Zorastrian. Each religion ofcourse has its different denominations.

“Unity in diversity” is a mantra all Indians chant but most do not fully realize the depth of diversity until living outside the country.

I have decided to set up a separate page on India on my travel blog because I feel that most tourists come to India inadequately prepared mentally…and with different expectations.  In my continued postings, I will write about visiting or living in India. The postings will be about attitudes and will include places as an example.

Please feel free to ask specific questions…or correct me ! I am not posing as an expert but definitely believe that my experiences may help you be better prepared for your trip.

Happy musings 🙂

Why are you traveling to India
